Hello I am a first time poster. My wife and I bought a 2007 Prius in the U.S. and then imported it to Canada.

We had to retro fit day time running lights. To any Canadian owners : Do your headlights stay on when you put on the park brake ? Reason I am asking is the Toyota dealership is trying to tell me that they cannot wire the lights to work as most other cars I have owned do. That is put the e-brake on and the lights go off. This is to permit you to keep the accessories on while not "running" the car or in this case the headlights. . Currently the headlights stay on anytime the power is on. Since I do not have any fellow Prius owners in the neighbourhood and cannot go to a dealership to test one (as there are none on the lots!!)

    Thanks !

No. As far as I know, Mazda and GM cars do that (link the DRLs to the parking brake). With Toyota, you have to shut off the car before the light turns off.

If you start the car with the e-brake on the DRLs stay off until you release the e-brake. If you apply the e-brake while the car is in ready, the DRLs stay on. It's a little different than other cars.

I guess they are just trying their hardest to drain the 12V battery. As in, why the heck don't the interior lights go out after 5 min or so of "door open"? The Prius needs this badly. Especially ditto for the headlamps if the driver doesn't open the drivers side door after shutting off the car.

because the shut off is actually 20 mins, not 5.

    Thanks for that.

Does anyone know if there is a mod out there for daytime running lights. I end up sitting in my car alot (at work and waiting for kids) and I want to listen to music but cannot seem to find a way to do it without the headlights on.

I have tried powering down and apply ebrake and then power up on acc. Lights still come on. Lights are on anytime the power is on.

Can Tideland or anyone confirm that their DRLs stay off when power applied with park brake on ?

    Thanks

We just got an '07 Prius from the US and I am hearing that dealers around here are having trouble installing the DRLs in a Prius. Could you let me know who installed the DRLs in your Prius? Does anyone know of any shop/dealer in the Toronto (GTA) area that has installed DRLs in their Prius?

I would really appreciate any help.

    Thank you,

Would running with the fog lights satisify the requirement??

I was actually surprised that the Prius does not have DRLs. I thought every new car since several years ago had to have them. What happened to that regulation or am I just wrong on this?

Take a look at this article: http://priuschat.com/index.php?showtopic=3...;hl=webelectric

It shows you how to install do it yourself DRLs using the front turn signals. It uses a module from Web Electric and is very easy to install. I've heard from several Canadian Prii owners who have installed it and passed the Canadian inspections.

Nope, very few cars have them in the US. My 98 Chevy truck has them, but my 07 Prius and 05 Honda do not. If my insurance company gives discounts for DRLs, they must be a good thing. I just can't figure out why Toyota and Honda don't put them on.

Because it's not required. It is in Canada that's why we have it.

It's the same reason why we don't get side indicators on the fenders, because it's not required.

I don't believe side airbags are required, but they're included.

    Hi Phil,

I have a "thoroughbred" Canadian Prius and can confirm that the DRLs will indeed stay off if the parking brake is engaged when the car is powered up. On other hand if, engaging the parking brake after the fact will not shut them off. Only way to turn them off is to engage the brake then shut down & reboot the car.

    Hi there,

I've recently installed the webelectric kit to pass the federal safety inspection on my Prius (imported from US). This kit keeps the indicators on all the time while the car in turned on. Other than that, it works great. It sure beats the dealer installed option of keeping the headlights turned on all day; which also keeps the interior of the car illuminated (mfd is dimmed and all controls are lit)

The problem is that the US Prius does not have a set of equipment installed to allow for the drl to turn on/shut off with the e-brake. Its possible to configure the US Prius to function the same as a CAD Prius but its a pain to do as it requires taking out the dash and buying a boatload of relays
