I'm still debating with myself a bit over the package 2 vs. package 3. Heading to see the dealer later today. One of the appeals to me of the package 3 is the alarm. I might be driving up to my old stomping ground in NY at some point, and the thought of parking in the street and being just about the only one without a car alarm is a bit disturbing to me.

Does the alarm have any sort of visual indication that it's working? Like on most car alarms, a blinking light or something to discourage smash and grab people? Any other comments on the alarm, or the other stuff that comes with package 3?

    Thanks,

    Mark

yeah theres an engine immobilizer blinking light. worth noting is by default the prius alarm
doesnt include the glass breakage sensor, thats considered an upgrade. it only goes off if
    someone opens the locked door

Do what I do, don't leave anything in sight for then to 'grab'... I put my camera, laptop, etc, in the hatchback and pull the screen over it which leaves them invisible... I assume a thief would want to see what they are breaking a window to get, not just a crap-shoot...

I do have package #3 with the alarm, but I don't expect it to ever be set off intentionally... The light for the alarm on the dash is rather inconspicuous and I don't know if a would be thief would notice it before slamming a crow-bar through your window...

I do HIGHLY recommend package #3 for the other features it offers, namely the enhanced sound system, the dimming rearview mirror (if you drive at night on highways), Bluetooth is nice once it is all set up, and I personally don't use it, but the Homelink features could be handy... Also, it seems that #3 is more sat radio friendly but I haven't tested that yet...

Point being, get #3 and don't look back... anything higher seems like a joke (so-so NAV, fog lights, HID lights), according to alot of posts here, and is a waste of money and all of these items can be installed by yourself after-market...

Thanks, I already did the package 2 and it has the same (or similar) inconspicuous blinking light for the engine immobilizer. I think this stereo is fine, but I'm sure the other one would have been better, yes. And I'll just get a better standalone navigator with even better bluetooth.

The alarm was for when I travel back to my home turf in NY. But I think the engine immobilzer light will do fine. I live on blocks in the city where someone would smash your window because he saw an interesting looking piece of dust. So putting stuff out of sight isn't an issue. Having an indication that they'd be in trouble if they tried would be.

I would have liked that mirror but - not for that much more.

Became a moot point actually, I got the last Prius in my area pre tax break termination and she is a pkg 2, and she's great!

I really appreciate your taking the time to reply though -
