I've been reading the forum and can't really find the answer. When will I need to change the batts?

when they die out? I wouldn't hold your breath lol. Our cabbies have nearly 500,000kms on them and they have no issues.

    Depending on driving style.... Never.

My 05 has 118,000 and I figure at a minimum it will go 250-300k before the batt needs replaced.

Just follow your MPG. A continuous drop over a period of months would indicate that the Batt isn't charging properly.

An 04 taxi in Canadia I think went 400,000 on the original batt before Toyota bought the car back to chop it into litlle pieces to see how it wore.

Sounds like the premise of a great 'letter to the editor.'

I think the answer to the original question is "drive it." You may need to change the little 12V battery before too long but so far the only people with '04+ Prius who have needed a replacement HV pack look to have had a bad one from the factory.

Definitely keep driving it! Personally, I am going to try to get as much mileage on my car as I can. I was able to run up 250,000+ on a 1978 Diesel Rabbit before it overheated and cracked the block. I wonder if I can beat that number? What is the highest mileage car owned by a PC member?

We had a Chevy Caprice Classic (1977) that we parked (still able to run) when it hit 360,000 miles... and a chevy pickup engine that we documented over 500,000 miles on (in three different vehicles).

Oh, and I was once given a Toyota Corolla that had something like 300,000 on it, and still ran.

My friend got 2 priuses. First Gen with 170 K and a 2004 2nd Gen with 85 K Miles are still Going strong. No problems what so ever.

MY Toyota 4 runner which Purchased on April 6 1986, I gave to some one in 2001 is still going.
Regular oil changes, one paint job 3 muffler and 2 sets of shocks, clutch repair once. That is all done to it.
My fiend’s Corolla is still going strong after 385 K Miles.

All that is necessary is regular change of fluids, Keeping the body and engine clean
Twice a year good wax, paint seal jobs. Preventive and timely maintenance is the Key.

Change of mufflers, shocks, brake pad, and belt replacement on a regular basis.
With proper maintenance these well built cars could last at least 300K miles Plus.

The service dept. of dealer that sold me my Prius has a couple of customers with 2nd Gen Prius that have north of 150,000 miles on them (one of them is an '05...) and according to the service adviser, the cars are still going strong. I wonder who has the most miles on a 2nd Gen Prius at the moment? I am wanting to filter for 2nd Gen Prius so I can set a target for what to achieve with my 2nd Gen Prius.

Well I just got mine with 119,024 on the dial. Seems to run as good as my wifes brand new 2007 which, although we just bought it in June 07 has 17,000 miles on it. Really cannot tell a huge difference in drive ability.

However we both filed up at after leaving the dealership, and her avg was 46 and mine was 39 mpg - but her read out showed she created many more car icons (50wh) than I so we drove completely differently and I beat her home. That would be more indicative of my drive style or generating abilities than the aged batteries.

Will keep you posted. I would like to read more from the over 100,000 mile club (I did a search for "over 100,000 miles and nodda).

P.S. in the warranty thread posted question to all, is the AUL Administrators Consumer Protection Service Contract the dealership told me I was "lucky" to get at all for $1,650 a rip or a keeper. $200 deductible evidently, and some negative stuff came up on a Google search for this company. I thought at the time it was a Toyota extended warranty but no such product. 2 yrs or 24k miles, it's gonna be used up FAST I do a lot of driving, guessing I'll hit 24k in 14 months. ADVICE?

I would be very interested in reports of life after 100,000 miles. In particular, what things (if any) were done early on to enhance later life experiences (Mobil 1/other synthetic vs. dyno oil for the ICE; early change of the transmission fluid, and, and, and). I wonder if a separate thread should be started?

I asked recently a friend of mine with 1st generation Prius with 170 K miles about, what, if any thing failed.
He said light bulbs , some plastic trim fell off and wind shield( from coal truck-common over here)

From my past experience with Honda, Toyota and Volvo I thought at least there will be a need for drive belts, ball joints, muffler etc at that mileage.
    He said none.

    He did not use mobil1
Most of his driving is highway, Long trips to spend time every week with his kids,
The only service he got done that is not mentioned in his manual is change of transmission fluid and coolant every 60 K miles done by the dealer.

He keeps his car clean and takes it to service in time. (Oil change 3-5 K miles). His car got lots of chips ( paint damage) from Rocks and debris on the fender, bumpr and hood.

One data point is this study from DOE. They found that at 160,000 their two 2001 Prii were down to about 40% of original battery capacity. Interestingly there was not much of any effect found on gas mileage.

I'm sure every car will wear at different rates depending on how its driven, maintained, etc. With the Prius your local terrain and temperatures will also probably play in the battery pack longevity. Chances are you still have many miles ahead of you!

I can't consider rock chips (or windshield breakage from a lump of coal) as a failing of the car itself. That is more like road hazards. But thanks for sharing (seriously). I think the 60K transmission fluid replacement is a good preventive practice. I am going to send off a sample for analysis at 5,000 miles; if the analysis comes back with a lot of metal content, then I will replace it.

How many transmissions did you go through? I was on my 3rd at 95,000.
