I've got 2 prices from 2 different dealers, and there is a difference of roughly $1,300 in the MSRP for the base vehicles.

Is there a source of information that clearly shows the differences between the model numbers? The 1220 from one dealer is listed as $20,950 and the 1224 from a different dealer is listed as $22,325. Both are 2008s. The other options are jumbled such that comparing apples to apples is nearly impossible, but I'm hoping I can at least figure out what's going on with the base models.

check www.toyota.com, it will show you the difference in the 2 models plus the touring model. I haven't seen the new cheapie base model around the northeast at all.

I checked their site, but I can't find any sort of simple comparison.

There's a chart that explains the differences between the regular and Touring models, but I can't find anything for the two different stripped down models. At least I was able to confirm that the MSRP the dealers were giving me were both accurate.

When you get to the shopattoyota.com page, you can see 3 choices:
So the Touring thing is at least clear but not the other difference.

One of the dealers seems to be making the claim (although in an unclear manner) that a 1220 is simply a 1224 with Package #1. (Or a 1224 is a 1220 with Package #1.)

    Can anyone confirm this?

EDIT: OK, did some more poking around on the web and I might have an answer to the mystery.

It looks like a 1220 is a Prius with zero options (except the optional dealer markup).

A 1224 is a 1220 with the "HZAT" package, which is not the same as Package #1.

Package #1 does not appear to exist for the 2008s. From the Toyota site, a #1 includes cruise control, heated outside mirrors, 15-in alloy wheels with trim rings, tonneau cover and seatback pockets. The HZAT package appears to include everything above, except for the tonneau cover, although, again, I'm unable to compare apples to apples, because the HZAT package is not listed in the same place as Package #1, and other places list more stuff in Package #1 than I found in the HZAT package.

Is there any definitive source for this kind of thing?

Note that this still doesn't completely make sense, because the price for #1 on the 2007s is listed as $825 and the difference between the 1220 and 1224 is about $1300 and it appears as though you're getting less with the HZAT than the #1.

Just got back from the dealer and it turns out that the above is somewhat correct.

A 1220 is simply a Prius with no packages. If you get any package at all, you can't call it a 1220. Whether or not you can magically change a 1220 into a 1224 by trying to slap a package on it is an issue of bureaucracy and semantics. It might be that you're not allowed to add any packages to a car that is originally designated as a 1220. I don't know for sure.

A 1224 comes with at least Package HZAT, which is not the same thing as Package #1. It has fewer options, and is probably another attempt to create a more affordable version of the car. You can also add other packages to it.

A 1226 is a Prius with at least the Touring defaults. I don't know if you can morph a 1224 into a 1226 by adding things, but this is, again, semantics.
