Okay, the choices seem to be KB20U or KB22U (4-8 places).

    Cybele wrote on the YG:

"I was hoping you were right on that. But I looked up my VIN which is for a BI (Rear wiper, side airbags and smart start/entry) and the digits in question are: KB20U"

I suspect that the "20" and "22" might indicate whether or not the vehicle has driver and passenger side & curtain airbags. I have no idea whether this is even close, however.

If anyone has any information, please post......particularly if you have a VIN such as "KB22U" with the side & curtain airbags.

Is it possible that the 20/22 difference is for the VSC? Since some folks with airbags have the 22, do we know if they have the full safety package with the foglamps and VSC?

I'm going off on a little Prius mission at lunchtime to the parking lot (there are two, maybe three others in my garage) and maybe I can find something else out.

    Cybele,

I suppose that's possible, but do you actually know anyone with a "22" that has side and curtain airbags?

I know, from your previous post, that you have those airbags and your VIN has a "20". I have also seen MSRPs in the mid-$21k range all the way up to the MSRP for the BC package and every one appears to be a "20". The "22's" I've seen are base models with MSRPs in the $20k range.

Just put one issue to rest; no, it's not possible that the "22" is for the VSC.

VSC is only available on the AM and BC packages and I've seen base models with "22" in the VIN.

Okay - new theory. Maybe the 20 means California Emissions and the 22 is 50 States.

    Cybele,

Read it (and responded with a question for her re the airbags)!

However, a couple of the "22's" I saw were at some dealer in Pinellas Park, Florida.....???

That's what I was thinking too, because I did read that there are 2 different "versions" in the US of the Prius.

We'll get the information (I'll bet within a matter of hours). FWIW, my "guess" regarding the difference was based on the Classic VIN (per Michelle's old post on the YG.......BK18U w/side airbags, BK12U without).

Okay, so far we have two owners of AM and BG packages, neither of which have side & curtain airbags, with KB22U VINs.

I would agree with that hypothesis since that is one way that Insurance companies could look at your VIN to determine the safety features on your car and give you deductions accordingly.

Only one other Prius in the parking garage today (sometimes there's a driftwood and a salsa there).

It was a Silver and all I could tell was that it had the basic stereo system. It was sold by Toyota of Manhattan Beach, CA and has a middle VIN code of KB22U. So that shoots the theory of the 20/22 having something to do with the emissions.

AM(#7) does have the side/curtain airbags.

    I have an AM(#7) and I have a 20 VIN.

    To clarify then:

    From the YG:

One member has a BG package with a "22"

One member has a AG package with a "22"

From a couple of dealers' inventories:

Base models have VINs with "22's"

Did this thread ever find any definitive conclusion?

In March when we got insurance, because our VIN starts with "JTDKB20" 6 mos was $519.

Our insurance guy said if the "20" was "22" it would have been $504. He didn't know why.

We have a Driftwood #5 with a model number of
    NHW20L-AHEEBA and I've seen NHW20 is:
    the BASIC MODEL CODE
    NHW20 : With 1NZ-FXE Engine

    Any further ideas?

I have a #7 package, with a "20" VIN. Previously, I almost found/bought a #3 package, which I happened to note had a "22" VIN. My suggestion: cars with "22" VINs are lower option packages, therefore less expensive cars, therefore slightly less to insure. Certainly doesn't seem to have anything to do with additional safety features, since the #7 "20"'s have more safety stuff.

Don't know if this clears anything up, but thought I would mention it:

From page 2 of the '04 Prius Emergency Response Guide:
So any numbers after the first 6 are apparently "fair game" for Toyota.

Did anyone ever figure this out?
Just got a call from my dealer/salesman. Said that our Tideland #9 (BC) was due in port tomorrow with a JTDKB20 VIN.

The VIN on my Silver BC is a "20", FWIW (i.e. JTDKB20xxxxxxxxxx).
