Does the Prius have any type of output for GPS data, serial / bluetooth? For connecting to a laptop / other GPS software. Other GPS units i've had have this capability, but I can't seem to find any info on the Prius unit.

I would also love to know the answer to this question. Our company just got an '04 Prius, and we do traffic studies, so it would be handy to be able to use data from the in-car unit. Maybe we would need a PDA with bluetooth? Or a laptop with some kind of serial or USB port?

I haven't heard of too many (if any) built-in car units that have outputs for the GPS. I may be mistaken, but I think you are out of luck with the Prius (in this regard at least).

interesting question... bluetooth can be picked up by laptops that have the hardware, etc. but will it control anything else besides just the cellphone? dont know and dont consider it extremely likely to be honest with ya.

if would be cool in most circumstances since BT has a very limited range, but at the same time, i wonder if there is a safety issue with allowing monitoring by outside software and its possible effects on the computer systems operating the car. BT would be a place for a hacker to enter...

also there have been several knowledgeable computer techie guys who have been experimenting with the Prius to see what kind of info they can find. here is a site where one has gotten a lot of extra info using a dongle connection. you might want to check out his site for any new info he might have. i havent been there in a few months so he might have something new to report

I doubt the GPS would ever be on the CAN. Nothing on the CAN needs it.

The Prius has 3 main networks: CAN (for the automotive/HV stuff), BEAN (for body electronics communications), and AVC for the audio/visual. The Gateway ECU connects all three, but only the NAV would need the GPS, so I doubt the gateway would be capable of passing the GPS info through.

As for bluetooth, there is only 2 protocols the prius uses, and they are used for cellphones. One of them, my laptop didn't respond to, so the prius could not connect to the laptop.
