Where I installed my ScanGauge

    Nothing new here. I just placed it behind the steering wheel on the steering column. What I did a little different was to fabricate/machine my own mount to raise the SG about 1". Without it, the steering wheel will partially block the SG from normal view. As you can see from these photos, everything is attached by velcro. The OBDII cord runs thru & behind the dash and cannot be seen... except where it connects to the SG of course. Works perfectly and the installation is very clean looking.

    Looks really good, but how much of the dash did you have to take apart? And how?

    Why not use the rear facing port, so the cable is obscured from view? Also, what material is that mount and how did you shape it?

    Btw, I plan on using a cut-to-length female to male RJ45 ribbon cable to connect the ODBII cable to the SG, so I can hot swap to my RX-8 without having to reroute the cable each time I change cars.

    Thanks for posting these pictures because I want to get a SG but fear a jimmy-rigged install. So far I've installed only mods that do not alter the look of the car, i.e Coastal EV, EBH. I've been thinking about installing it in the compartment under the CD too, but I'm not sure I want to drill a hole for the cable. Maybe I should just get over it and drill...

    You can probably buy a replacement compartment/pocket, with the same Toyota hole pattern. Just keep it around if you want to go back to the no-hole compartment/pocket.

    I think there are two or four screws holding the compartment/pocket to the radio bracket.

    Maybe just remove the whole compartment/pocket? No more issue about drilling a hole for the cable...

    I did not have to take the dash apart at all. With the adjustment lever for the steering wheel in the unlocked position, lower the height on your steering wheel. This will widen the gap around the steering column and allow you to feed the cord directly to the OBDII plug on your Prius. Once the cord is routed, you can raise the height of the steering wheel back up to the highest position if desired. There should be little to no compression of the cord.

    Good idea. I had considered it initially but ended up using the side, because it was easier to plug into the side from where the cord comes out of the steering column. Also, I think there's just not enough clearance at the rear to connect it properly (without creating too much of a bend/kink into the cord). I think the last photo I provided illustrates just how narrow that space is behind the SG. However, I'll have to give the rear another try.

    The mount is made of wood (1"x1" stock), purchased at Home Depot. I used a band saw to cut a slight arc into the bottom of the mount (to match the shape of the steering column), sanded everything down and then spray painted it black to match the SG.

    No problem. The excess cord can be looped and wedged (or tied off) behind the bottom portion of your dash where the OBDII plug sits. Everything is nice & hidden.

    That looks really great! Might be a good place for things other than a Scangauge too. I've had problems with velcro though... it gets so hot here that the adhesive is weaker than the velcro connection and so separation is not at the desired interface :( You must only pull it off when the temperature is cool.

    Yeah. I always use my sun shades to prevent the dash (& more importantly, the adhesive on the back of the velcro) from getting too hot. Fortunately, I only need to do this during the hot summer months.

    Do any of the ScanGauge users remove the ScanGauge from their vehicle when the vehicle is unoccupied? Is thef a concern similar to GPS units?
