Valentine One. It not only shows you that there is a radar somewhere, it also shows you how many of them and where: in front, at sides or behind you. For instance, even number left from you is probably automatic door in a convenience store :)

I know V1 price since I own one :D. It has been sitting on the shelf though since I sold my M3 couple of years go.

Anyway, it all depends on the purpose of the radar detector (if there is more than one  ). If it is to avoid police traps and speeding tickets, then extra $200 will be a good investment. After all, even a single ticket, hassle and insurance rate raise will add up to much more. Why save $200 and then lose $300? V1 will serve you for years, it can be installed concealed and is firmware upgradeable.

Lazy, I can definitely recommend Valentine 1 (I own one myself, and it is one of the best appliances I've every bought next to my TIVO), but this won't fit into the 1-200 budget stated. The V-1 sells for $400. But hands-down it's the best consumer radar detector made (within reason).

If your father used his cruise control, he wouldn't have need for a radar detector.

Wrong. Most traps are not on a highway, but on some obscure stretch of the road, where you simply won't expect some randomly set speed limit to be enforced. I already mentioned in some other thread an interesting stretch of the road that happens to exist next to my home. It is couple of miles in woods without a single house. In one direction speed limit is 35 mph. In another it is 25 mph. Typically everyone except very few drives 40. Recently I noticed police car sitting after dark with light out (obviously in that 25 direction). That's what radar detector is for.

I have read elsewhere that unless a special condition exists (like a school zone), speed limit is set to what 80% of motorists drive at. I drive this road twice daily and everyone with very few exceptions drives 40. Why the limit is 25? I suspect that it has nothing to do with 80%. It has to do with city income.

In the area where I live I observe 55 mph curve two lane roads without any divider as well as 60 mph 10 lane highways. I see zero logic in this.

Not to beat a dead horse, but V1 hands down. Had an old Passport, invested $400 in a V1 10 years ago.

Saved my butt last night on a country road near Occidental, CA.
Saved me numerous times on the way to Santa Cruz.

An LED went out about 5 years back, I sent it in and they fixed it for free.

And I see zero logic in your logic. :) The one and only purpose for a radar detector is to help the user break a law they don't like or agree with. OK, there is logic in your arguement.

No. You have right to know you are being watched unless you are a criminal. That's part of your freedom. Even if you area criminal, police cannot tap your phone without a proper warrant. However, it is perfectly fine to use a radar. I consider it same matter as surveillance. Granted, general surveillance may not require a warrant, but it typically requires an explanation why one is a suspect. Use of radar does not require even that little. It just requires 'a gut feeling' that someone may be breaking a speed limit. This is plain wrong.

Side note: I don't have any speeding tickets. Nor any other tckets for over 7 years which include driving sports cars. And this is not b/c I owned radar detector. I haven't used it in the last 3 years anyway.

When I purchase the Valentine V1.
In a 2004 Prius where is the best place to mount it for level and optimum reception of signals.
And of course best way to wire it for power? For instance to what it can be wired to?

    Thanks,
    Bryan

V1 Web site has a lot of useful information. See http://www.valentine1.com/moreinfo/

    Mounting: http://www.valentine1.com/moreinfo/Mountin...ing_pg15-17.pdf

There are different ways of monting it, including behind the front grillewith small remote display in the cabin. I simply put mine on a velco pad on the dash. I don't like sun visor mount since I have to tilt my head to see the display and can't use the visor to block the sun. I think dash mount and behind the front grille mount are the best.

V1 comes with cigarette lighter adapter.

However, you'll lose rear detection if you mount V1 under the hood. I am wondering if it is possible to mount it behind passenger seat on the hatch and wire remote display to the front. I need to find my V1 :D

Hell, this old fart is gonna jump in here with both feet. I'm with Bruce_2000 I really do not understand the logic of exceeding the speed limit particularly in a Prius. Why not go to a track and try your speed skills with real drivers and not with us regular folks just trying to stay alive and get home after work? Gets you there a couple of minutes earlier but not only probably endangers yourself and other drivers but these detectors do not help if photos are taken. The highway folks (my nephew is in the RCMP so this info only applies to Canada) are getting clever too... if you use anything to blank out your licence this is immediately determined and you'll have a red and blue on your tail... not only for speeding but then charged with trying to hide your plate.
So is our purpose in life to see how many laws we can break and get away with? How about a " shop-lifter detection beater" or a "wipe out the gas pump reading electronic device"?
Have I ever speeded? I'd be a liar if I said I never did but that does not
prevent me from offering my opinion after being effected by an accident caused by speeding. Fortunately I was not personally responsible but know first hand the devastation one family experienced and the financial ruin of the guy who was sued. Happened in a split second! Perhaps someone can explain why it's worth taking the chance.
    My $0.02.

Radar detector does not necessarily serve breaking the law. First, I want to know if I am being watched. Would you allow your house to be searched by some random cop? No? Why? You don't have to hide anything, or do you? How's about phone tap or email screening? No? Why? You are not planning to break the law, are you?

Stores and gas stations are private properties, they are free to do as they please. You are, however, free not to visit stores you don't approve. However, you can't do the same to police.

As for pictures, it is interesting thing from privacy point of view. I remember a lawsuit in Europe when speed camera took picture of someone's car and picture showed driver with his mistress in the car. Divorce followed. Driver sued police for violation of privacy. I don't remember what was the outcome, but I do remember that Audi started to offer privacy windshield glass which blacked out the driver face. I think the outcome was that court banned police from publishing photos or mailing them to the offender, they could only be presented in court.

And, by the way, traffic does not necessarily moves under speed limit. I am currently in San Diego on vacation and couple of days ago drove up to Disneyland with my family. Higway traffic was moving 75-85 while limit was 65. I didn't want to be a road hazard so I moved with traffic (traffic speed IS the safest speed). However, I would prefer to have a radar detector since techically police officer could pick any random car from the speeding traffic and write a ticket.

ok then the next question is where do you mount it on the dash where it is not point up or pointing down but level?
And do you use the cigarette lighter or would the hard wire be better and if so where to wire?

    Thanks,
    Bryan

I have both the valentine 1 top model and the best escort. The escort totally out performs the valentine 1 range wise. It doesn't really matter if the cop is in either direction. The valentine one is not a good choice, its way over priced, and not that powerful. If you are really interested in laser and radar detection, build yourself a nifty active radar jammer, but only use it when needed becuase its kinda obvious to a cop that his radar is going crazy and you are the only one near his car. :p

Since you like the escort. What do you think of the battery operated version?
Also where did you mount your detectors so they would be level since the dash is tilted?

    Thanks,
    Bryan
