Last week the "check engine light" in our prius came on.
We took it to the dealer and the technician pulled the code wich said:

    P0446 evap system malf

The dealer said the technician could not run a level 2 evap system check because our gas tank was full.
I had to return when the gas tank was between 1/4 and 3/4 full.

Today I took it back in and dealer called me to say there is a sensor broken wich would cost over $600.
On top of that there are labor costs cause they need to remove the gas tank.
Our prius is 3 and a half years old and has 30k miles.

My question is, what's wrong with the car? Is dealer on the level? Any chance of this being covered by warranty?

Any information you folks could give me about this would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Alan

Was the P0446 the only code? It just might be a loose gas cap... P0450, P0451, and P0500 codes are related to some sensors malfunctioning and if you did not have these codes, then it is unclear what the problem is.

I'd drive about some more, fill-up some gas and make sure the gas cap is properly seated and that it itself passes the pressure (?) check that most diagnostic centers can do for you.

Let us know how it turns out.

That would be my guess, a loose gas cap. It's the most common problem to trigger the Check Engine light, even on conventional cars.

Well I went to go get the car, because the part was on back order and it would take several days.

The thing is, the light is not on anymore, and it hasn't come on these past 2 days.

So I guess should I just drive it a bit longer and see if it comes back on instead of spending the $$$ to have the sensor replaced.

Thanks for the replies they helped a lot

If it was a loose gas cap, it takes several on/off cycles for the code to clear. I can't remember the number of cycles, someting like 3 or 4. I'm pretty sure that's what you had for a problem.
