The president's warmongering remarks on the Iranian threat suggest he is psychotic.

    Straitjacket Bush
    by Rosa Brooks

    Forget impeachment.

Liberals, put it behind you. George W. Bush and Dick Cheney shouldn't be treated like criminals who deserve punishment. They should be treated like psychotics who need treatment. Because they've clearly gone mad. Sane people, confronting such a situation, do their best to tamp down tensions, rebuild shattered alliances, find common ground with hostile parties and give our military a little breathing space. But crazy people? They look around and decide it's a great time to start another war.

On Tuesday, Bush insisted on the need "to defend Europe against the emerging Iranian threat."
Huh? Iran is now a major threat to Europe? The Iranians are going to launch a nuclear missile (that they don't yet possess) against Europe (for reasons unknown because, as far as we know, they're not mad at anyone in Europe)? This is lunacy in action.

Iran has an economy the size of Finland's. . . . It has not invaded a country since the late 18th century. The United States has a GDP that is 68 times larger and defense expenditures that are 110 times greater. Israel and every Arab country (except Syria and Iraq) are . . . allied against Iran. And yet we are to believe that Tehran is about to overturn the international system and replace it with an Islamo-fascist order? What planet are we on?"

    Planet Cheney.

But all this creates a conundrum. What's a constitutional democracy to do when the president and vice president lose their marbles? Impeachment's not the solution to psychosis, no matter how flagrant. But despite their impressive foresight in other areas, the framers unaccountably neglected to include an involuntary civil commitment procedure in the Constitution.

Still, don't lose hope. By enlisting the aid of mental health professionals and the court system, Congress can act to remedy that constitutional oversight. The goal: Get Bush and Cheney committed to an appropriate inpatient facility, where they can get the treatment they so desperately need. In Washington, the appropriate statutory law is already in place: If a "court or jury finds that [a] person is mentally ill and . . . is likely to injure himself or other persons if allowed to remain at liberty, the court may order his hospitalization."

I'll even serve on the jury. When it comes to averting World War III, it's really the least I can do.

Bush psychosis is not hyperbole. Here is a book writteh by a psychiatrist in 2004 who makes an admittedly remote assessment of Bush but whose observations nonetheless identify numerous significant indicators of mental disorder, alchoholism chief among them.

And how does Europe feel? Does it feel threatened? Does it want the U.S. defending it against anyone? (Because it obviously can't defend itself?)

Please. If we can't impeach him, can we have him committed?

I assume we're talking about the missile defense shield in Europe. I know Russia's not happy about it, but I haven't heard about the other European countries complaining about it. Therefore, I must assume that they actually want the missile defense shield located in Europe. So therefore they must feel threatened by something that they feel the missile defense shield will guard against. So, if it isn't Iran, then who? Are all the European leaders psychotic too?

Its the alliance of Iran and Russia that worries the former Soviet client states, who feel like they are in a squeeze between them. And they worry more about Russia than they do Iran, but they know just as Iran uses Hezbolla, Russia can use Iran to do things Russia wouldn't do.

Iran should be a European problem (and Isreal's). I'm leaning more towards isolationism as far as they are concerned. We almost have them surrounded with Iraq and Afghanistan occupied, and I hope with more diplomatic pressure, the Iranians will rise up and cast off the rulers.

Can the people pass a law without congress and the potus? I submit that any new middle east interventions MUST be manned with forward units that compose solely of members of congress, the president's office, and members of the media who thump the drums of war. They can opt out of this pseudo draft by sending their children. Don't have any children? They can sell all their assets to pay for the war and live on minimum wage till the war is done. See this bill has plenty of choices.

I really don't know if I can continue with the purchase of a Prius knowing I'll be ultimately grouping myself with such a high concentration of whacko liberals from the Peoples Republic of Kalifornia. Is it a coincidence most that responded so far are from there?

There should be a receipt for who voted for whom. Those who punched the ticket for the bush and co. should pay for the war. Those who voted for him twice. Shame on you.

As for soldiers who voted for him twice, do they have a right to complain about their military plight?

What about the Democrats who wrote the "blank check" to Bush? I saw very little opposition in the lead-up to the war. In fact there was even support...

Iraq is a "bi-partisan" mess. It was the Presidents idea, but the Democrats were quite willing partners.

(Don't forget neither Hillary or Barack are willing to promise to pull troops out by 2012...)

Delusional thinking will get you nowhere. The Democrats, who controlled nothing at the time, were fed a bunch of bogus lies about WMD's (don't forget Colin Powell's and Rumsfelds testimony about how we knew they had WMD's AND WE KNEW WHERE THEY WERE). Also, the President is the President and is responsible for the direction and policy of the country. Don't try to dodge the facts. thismis Bush's war and it is the worst foreign policy blunder in the history of the USA.

Also, don't try to equate not knowing how to handle the mess Bush created with the error of creating it. Starting the war was a massive mistake. What to do about it now is another question.

I disagree. Look what delusional thinking has gotten the evangelical christians of our nation...... Ultimate power and control of the country. Delusions can be powerful regardless of their validity. :(

And let's not forget that anyone who opposed the Republicans was labeled UnAmerican, Traitor and worse. In fact, there are those who still consider anyone that doesn't blindly support Bush a Terrorist-sympathizer.

Bush is just trying to ramp up a new boogie man to keep us afraid. It's worked very well for the bushies so far and they believe that the American people are stupid enough to believe it again. Maybe we are. What have they done since they weaseled their way in to the White House except to bring out one made up threat after another to stay in power and make money? Iraq wasn't about oil, terrorism or WMD, it was about money and they're still making tons of money at the taxpayer's expense. Bush's war has cost him nothing. The bushies know exactly what they're doing. True, they haven't got a conscience, don't care about the constitution, they don't have compassion, or a lot of other components that make up a normal human being but they're not psychotic. Meanwhile, the democrats lack courage and conviction. They have no clue what they really stand for and haven't got an ounce of real leadership among them. It doesn't matter much whether the democrats or the republicans are the ones who win the fool-the-gullible-taxpayer sweepstakes in 2008. Either way, we're still screwed. The democrats haven't got what it takes to put a real candidate on the ballot and the republicans are pretty much tapped out themselves when it comes to leading the country in a meaningful way that benefits the country itself. This country hasn't got any real leaders and the country's credit card is maxed out. The only way anything is really going to change is when the real sh** hits the fan and we have no choice but to actually deal with our crisis instead of shopping and putting magnets on our cars. Hopefully, when that happens, the taxpayers in this country will know what to do but so far, it doesn't like like we have a clue either.

I think the real danger is that President Bush is known as a man of conviction by both sides (albeit that some think his convictions are wrong). He may want to "solve" the Iranian problem before he leaves office so that he isn't leaving it as a mess to his successor. He has shown he has the conviction to risk his party's future, and his own "legacy" for what he believes in, and if he believes he must "solve" Iran, the deadline is January, 2009. Deadlines like this cloud the judgment of advisors ... remember the "deadline" of invading Iraq before the hottest summer months? Then deadlines about holy days, etc.?

I think most people are wrong about Iran; it should be left to Isreal and the EU to deal with, and America should stop spending its lives and treasure on defending Europe. The EU is wealthy enough to defend themselves, even if their history shows they would much rather destroy their continent than preserve it.

Wacko is generally used to describe people who are either oblivious to reality or choose to ignore it and continue to do stupid things right? That pretty much describes most hard core conservatives IMO. Would you like to compare notes and let everyone else decide just who the wacko (most ignorant on real issues) is? LOL Or maybe your view is skewed due to all the toxic chemicals leaking from your abondoned mines is leeching into your drinking water. :)

Funny you say that considering some of the most environmentally conscious and healthy countries are part of the EU. It would do us well to learn from them.
