My wife has a 2006 Prius. When we purchased it, no dealer anywhere had one in stock, we couldn't test drive one prior to ordering, and we paid MSRP, as no deals were available. Since then Toyota increased production to the point that they actually offered deals on them for a brief period of time. I also noticed that dealers do still have them in their lots.

I will be needing a new car hopefully before Christmas. I am driving my Wife's old car, a 1998 Camry with 190,000 mies. With gas prices over 3 dollars a gallon, I am considering adding another Prius to our garage. My question is, will dealers go below MSRP or discount pricing in any way now, or is it still MSRP. What have people who have recently purchased experienced at the dealership?

In my experience in southern CA, a hot bed of prii, I was a ble to negotiate hundreds of dollars off of a touring package 6 prius. As a matter of fact the dollar amount was closer to $800. It is my impression that I could have received even a bigger discount closer to $1,000, but I wasn;t going to buy the car from the anyways. So, my view is that you shouldn't settle for anything less than at least $500 below msrp, if not more. I would start at offering to pay $300 above dealer cost and go from there.

I just bought my 2008 last weekend. I was able to get the dealer to knock a few hundred off the price, but that was about it. Still, it's better than paying sticker. ;)

My advice is to read through www.carbuyingtips.com and contact the Internet sales managers now. Historically demand has followed the price of gas. In NJ gas has jumped as much as 10c overnight with prices in the $2.70's common. Under these circumstances I would expect it would be difficult to get a dealer to budge from MSRP. Good luck.

I just purchased a 2008 base w/package 3 this week for about 600 under MSRP sticker. Probably could have gotten even lower but was picky about color/package and was tired of waiting. I think it depends also on the area you're purchasing in. Check out the thread "How much you paid for your Prius" and you'll see what I mean!

I just got $1400 off of msrp on a 2008 pkg 6. It wasn't easy though. They don't like to come off of that money on them.

In my experience you really really have to be ready to walk. Just say "Thank you, I guess it's not time for me to buy a car yet. I can't afford that much of a payment. blah blah. They seem to always go back to the manager and get more.

I just bought a 2008 package 6 2 weeks ago in So. Cal. (L.A.) and my advice is to do internet searches of dealer inventories and find the car you want on that particular dealer's lot and then call or email the internet sales manager. I found no dealer willing to dealer trade as they would for another car. Most will balk at a lowball offer but if they have the car in stock they are more willing to negociate. I got $1200 off sticker because they had 3 of the color I wanted! Negociate from invoice price up. I had the actual pruchase price of the car firmed before I drove to the dealer. It was a good purchase experience as well.

I agree the internet sales manager is the way to go!

I contacted the internet sales manager, selected the car I wanted and he offered $1500 of the MSRP. With very minimal negotiating I received $2000 of MSRP, and the process was very painless (other than waiting 3 weeks for my exact pick to show up).

Before that I had shopped the dealers and none of the regular sales staff and managers would budge on the price.

    Get it?

You will not be able to get the same discount from a floor salesman than you can from an Internet sales manager.

    Internet sales manager.

I got $2100 off msrp in may through the internet sales manager at my local dealer. She offered that price right up front on a Package 6.

I shopped on craigslist to see what kind of discount that dealers in the area, then called my local dealer.

Bought my 2008 #2 package for $22,370. About $1500 off from a local dealer in Wisconsin. They did have around 6 sitting on the lot but they don't last long.

I just left the dealer...the car I want is due on the lot tomorrow. He has offered me the car at $912.57 off retail. 23759 - 912.57 = 22,846.43 in MA for a Package 2 Prius. I wonder if I should try to get more off...he lists $446 as "dealer holdback" and another $223.00 under "Whsl Financial reserve". I plan on buying tomorrow.

I'd try and get even a better deal. All it can do is save you money.

You definitely want to work only thru the Dealer Internet Manager to get your best pricing. I sent out 21 emails requesting pricing to both in-state and out-of-state dealers. Seven responded. I negotiated with the two lowest before buying and receiving my Prii in 5-1/2 weeks. The other big factor is location of the country where you are buying. I got my '08 Touring Pkg 6 in Sept for $2,000 under the MSRP of $28,110 and the dealer thru-in all-weather mats for free!!!! I wanted nothing on it but the Pkg 6 items and in the color I specified. That's what I bought. From what I have read on other threads, it seems that in some areas of the country, the dealers will not budge off of MSRP. Run, don't walk away from them and expand your search until you find a dealer that will work with you. A little effort will save you some money.

I went to the dealer in Durham to see if I could at least get them willing to negotiate below "base price" $22,325 which is actually MSRP. For 2008 Model 1224 the invoice price is $20,558 plus Opt. 3 MSRP is $2,105 ($1,895) the Manufa. Dev. Proc. & Handg fee is $715. Unless I get desperate, I can't see paying MSRP of $25,864 or over.

Is this the norm? I haven't purchased a vehicle in 20 years. I would have continued driving my car since it has never cost me over $200 a year in repairs. If it wasn't for the stupid deer that ran infront of my car on HWY US 1, I would still be driving it. (totalled by Ins. Co. since it would cost 3xs its worth to repair).

I have tried my local dealer, the one on Cap. Blvd. and the one in Durham. They want MSRP and let me walk out the door. I didn't even get to negotiate--I was told that other people pay MSRP and even over that amount.

I understand that they are entitled to make a profit, but over MSRP?

Besides my questions above, should I continue to fight or wait until 2009?

Anyone have PKG 3--Is it worth it? Or should I stick to Pkg. 2? Thanks.

I bought my Pri in July 06, was happy with White #6 so I took delivery in under 2 weeks. Paid full MSRP, basically 28K OTD, but at that time Georgie was giving 3150 back so it wasn't as painful. Glad to see that market forces are starting to work in our favour.
