Thought I would say HI!

    I have been spending some time looking for a new car to replace our 1991 Land Cruiser that gets about 10 1/2 MPG. Getting something that will save me money at the pump is important so that the gas savings can be converted to help pay for the new car. I am a member of another forum (ffrog.com) and have found that the forums can be very helpfull (and adictive), so here I am, digging around!

    I drive about 20 miles each way to work, half of that on the highway (65-70 mph) - flat roads.

    Summer time will require lots of A/C use!

    Any thoughts on MPG? Right now I am using 45MPG for my savings calculator and I will be able to save about $275/month on gas at $3.00/gal.

    Welcome to Priuschat. I think your commute is about perfect for the Prius. Don't worry about using the a/c in the summer. The mpg hit is miniscule, you'll take more of a hit in the winter when it's cold. I'd say you should get 50 mpg instead of 45.

    I think Gene is correct. You should use 50. I have never had a tank below 50 MPH since I bought the Prius. Now 15,000 miles. Here in Cincinnati we use the air from March to November. One thing that I noticed that was a big help was to crack the back windows. It seems to vent the back area when parkeed.

    MPG will depend on how committed you are to maximizing it.

    45 MPG is probably a reasonable expectation.

    If you keep your highway speeds below 65 MPH and you make some effort towards learning techniques that improve MPG, 50 or 55 are not unreasonable.

    If you prefer to crank the A/C to MAX COLD at all times, have a tendency to brake hard or stay on the accelerator all the way to the next stop, and make a lot of short trips on the weekends you could see your MPG drop closer to 40 MPG.

    Flat Roads + interstate + 20 miles = 50 MPG without a problem once the engine is broken in. You'll probably get in the 45 range the first 10k miles, but then you'll see a nice upward trend.

    Thanks for the quick replies! Getting anything over 45mpg would be great - I could afford to start drinking beer again! :D

    I guess the next step is the purchase.

    i get 44-45 mpg with a 3-5 mile average trip and terminal leadfoot. you'll do better than i do with that commute :)

    You may use your AC, but it doesn't work as hard as mine does. :)

    45 is a safe bet. You could get closer to 50, but I'm always conservative with numbers. I'm hoping my numbers go up a bit when (or if) they finish US 95.
