New Prius with High Mileage

Don't know if it's common, but I can see legit purposes like checking if everything works or familiarizing staff.

I'm suspicious of those dealer add ons. If this is an anti-rust coating it needs to be put on at the factory or it won't work. If this is a sound coating it could work.

 

Don't waste money on any add-on junk, including an extended warranty. Anyone who can't afford to pay for a (low-probability) big repair can't really afford to buy a new car.

40 extra miles is a little high but not ridiculous. Your choice whether you want to blow off this deal and wait for another. Take the delivery checklist with you to help you decide:

YEa.. for me that sounds a bit high. But then again, depends on how many people test drove it prior to you getting it as well i think, unless i missed something in your post.

i got lucky and had only 5 miles on my prius before i bought it 2 weeks ago. now i myslef put almost 500 miles already!

 

Mine hadn't even been through dealer prep yet; it had three miles on the odometer, six after the test drive. Just me, but I wouldn't buy a new car with 271 miles on it. :mellow:

I had 11 miles on my Prii when I got it. I would not worry about the unaccounted milage on your vehicle as the 3 year new car warranty will cover any problems that crop up. You can get the extended 7 year warranty here on PC for $990 which I'm sure is less than your Dealer is offering. Also, do to the shape of the Prius front-end (the hood, front bumper and L/R 1/4 panels), you WILL experience numerous small chips in the paint on your new Prii. And with the white primer paint that Toyota uses, they will stand out against the top coating. From what I have read from other PC members, the coating protection that Toyota offers doesn't make that much difference in stopping the chipping from occuring from bugs and gravel impacts. Leather and clear vinyl bras have been suggested for use to stop the chipping on the front end of the Prius. You can use the search feature here on PC and determine from the threads if you want to pursue using a bra or not on your new Prii.

Reviewing the new car delivery check list is an excellent idea to assertain that your Dealer has covered all of the bases before turning over the car. Good Luck and enjoy you car !!!!

My car had 160 on it.....I would have prefered a car with near zero miles, but this was the only white touring with navigation in the state and didnt want to wait to get it from out of state. But i thought 160 was alot.

 

It could also be one of the cars chosen at random for a test drive at the factory. In Kentucky 160 Camry's a day are chosen at random for a test drive, they said it puts 37mi. on the car. I'm sure the factory where the Prii are made have something similar in place.

40 miles sounds like test drive miles to me. Every new car I've ever bought has had anywhere from 12 - 50 miles on it at time of purchase...

 

Mine had 13 miles on it when I picked it up.

 

When you have 5000 miles on it, that mileage wont make any difference.

I agree with patsparks. I've purchased my new vehicles with anywhere from 1-300 miles on them, and it never made a difference in the long run.

cant really say that i see what the concern is about. using mapquest to determine that its 237 miles means they followed your route and then joyrided another 40 miles??

is that what you think?? not sure i can follow that. long drive without any stops of any kind i think...ya... hmmm...i guess a young guy... big bladder... sure it could be done.

now if they sold the car as new. you can add the starting mileage to your warrantee in most states. never know, if you have a breakdown at 100, 276 miles... might come in handy to see if it applies to your area

 

Most of the dealers use old retired guys for their dealer swaps LOL. Still might be going 80mph however cause the numbers might be a little blurry.

 

Yeah I think you'll be happy you went ahead with it. When I sold cars we did alot of dealer swaps, some pretty long distance, because the customer wanted something in particular, not easily found, we never had a problem.

 

i think after a few thousand miles, you will realize how good of an idea it was to buy a Prius and those few miles wont even be a distant memory. enjoy!!
