Immigrants over 65 can apply for SSI and Medicaid. Not surprising, but did you know:

The Federal Government provides a single refugee with a monthly allowance of $1,890 and each can also obtain an additional $580 in social assistance for a total of $2,470 a month.

Compare this to a single pensioner who, after contributing to the growth and development of America for 40 to 50 years, only receives a monthly maximum of $1,012 in old age pension and Guaranteed Income Supplement.

Makes me wish we could find some lawmakers with a lick of common sense. Why can't we find and elect the best, smartest and most experienced people with a track record to run the government and not get so caught-up on how they look and what party they belong to?

A good clue is the non-US English term "pensioner" as opposed to retiree.

This story originally comes from Canada, not the US, and it's still garbled. Refugees could get a one-time grant of CAD$1890, not monthly. They also recieved $580/mo for up to a year or until they found a job. These are, of course, people who have legally entered Canada as refugees. Since these people usually arrive with no belongings, the money is granted as a humanitarian gesture to get them back on their feet.

Canadian pensioners (as of 2006) got around CAD$800-900 a month permanently, more if they're poor.

See http://www.snopes.com/politics/immigration/refugees.asp for the full debunking.

Thanks Alan H. That the premise of my OP is false is actually good news!

It amazes me somewhat that people fail to recognize the vast difference between refugees and immigrants.

The US accepts about 30,000 refugees a year, in contrast to ~1.2 million legal immigrants and who knows how many illegal. Even if this story were true, providing a small amount aid to refugees who have had their entire lives destroyed (often by our actions in foreign countries, we pretty much don't accept any refugees unless their situation is our fault and even then most are turned away) sounds pretty reasonable to me.

The amount of hatred towards immigrants required for someone to outright lie (move the story from considered in Canada to active in US) and mislead (implying it applies to millions of immigrants, rather than thousands of refugees) is frankly baffling to me, as is the willingness of many to immediately accept this sort of message. Living in an area with a huge Mexican immigrant population (downtown Phoenix), and despite my all white New England upbringing, I've yet to figure out what all the fuss is about. Almost all that I have met and worked with have been friendly, very family oriented, and working their a$$ off to try and get by. The only ones I would concur are lower than scum are the organized crime gangs that are making a mint off human trafficing across the boarder. Of course, the tighter we try to make our border, the more money these guys make :(

BTW to be clear, speaking about people in general, not any particular members of this board!

Part of the problem is that statistics are thrown around all the time, and then people confuse them. One stat on the illegal immigration problem is that a large percentage of California's prison population is comprised of illegals, and therefore we have hundreds of thousands of illegals in our prisons. It isn't true.

Years ago I tracked down one story that didn't seem logical to me, that 80% of the prisoners were illegals. The REAL story was that 80% of the people who SHOULD be in jail but aren't are illegals, because they failed to appear. And it wasn't statewide, but in one county. The number of people at large from that county was a very small number, and the "80%" stat represented a small number of fugitives. And that makes sense, because someone already "under the radar" and illegal simply isn't going to surrender themselves for jail ... they just go home.

But that got "translated" from "80% of fugitives are illegals" to "80% of prisoners are illegals", a very different idea.

Absolutely true. All the other crap around you post notwithstanding, did you realize that "immigrant" doesn't mean either illegal or non-citizen. My wife is an immigrant who is also a citizen. Among my friends are a number of legal immigrants who are non-citizens. It is a fact that you don't have to be citizen to get social security benefits, however you do have to have paid into the plan. My father in law was a legal non-citizen immigrant, who paid into and later collected from Social Security.

There also have been articles written about undocumented/illegal/whatever immigrants paying into the system.

Since some have had to "borrow" a SS# to get a job, they are paying into the system, but will be unable to collect.

And no, the SSA keeps any "extra contributions" deposited to those social security accounts. Nice racket.
