trailer wiring harness info for 2007 Pri

Can't answer all your questions but with the 118308, you just don't want to be running a whole lot of lights since all the power is coming from car wiring that was just supposed to be powering the rear tailights. From the brochure that came with the 119308:

"Maximum stop light/turning signal per side is 1 (2.1 amps)
Maximum number of tailights (4.2 amps)"

The standard converter offered is normally a 5 amp per circuit box. At 1/2 amp per buld plus 1 or 2 for bad contacts and high resistence.. you still should be okay with normal trailering

You can however, go along with a heavy duty modulite that carries up to 20amp per circuit load.

Those Modulites take the trailer lamp power generation from the 12 volt battery circuits and transfer direct power to the trailer circuit lamp.

We have installed a few of the simpe converters, but all the modulite converters that are recommended now for any vehicle bypasses the vehicle standard harness circuit power, and uses a detect diode to switch to supplemental battery power.

No harm to the vehicle electrical system, and all the power you need, based on the sizew of your modulite...

Good luck with it. Splicing into the vehicle harness does not pose a problem.. the modulite has its own fuseable circuit..

I don't know about the 2007, but the manual for my 2004 says never tow a trailer. Maybe you'd get away with towing something really light, but the Prius was not designed for towing. So be very careful with anything of significant weight. Note that it's probably the PSD you'd have to worry about, rather than lack of total HP.

 

Nothing special will be needed if you use LED lights on the trailer! Your current situation can probably handle a small incandescent load, but I'm not going to add that much load simply because I'll switch everything out to much lower-draw LEDs on the trailer.

Even if you tow in the day, you'll need brakes and turn signals.

What trailer are you getting? I ordered SportsRig that is due any day now.

 

You may want to check your state laws. In some states trailer lights aren't required if the tow vehicle tail lights remain visible.

Your best bet by far is to simply by production LED units instead of replacing bulbs.

 

I am looking to hook up a UHaul trailer in January, was wondering if anyone could help me with what I need to do to wire a harness. Is it a standardized method, if so, can someone link me to a place where I can do this?

I want to hook this up before it starts snowing and install the Curt hitch as well. BTW, anyone know where I can find a cheap Curt hitch for my '07?

Just installed this on my 07 prius hitch. Works great just plug and play. Has additional power supplies for extra incandescent lighting for any trailer. Plugs right into existing Gen II rear lights. Attach the power lead to battery and ground, run the hitch cable out the bottom drian plug and good to go.

And my 07 pulls a U_Haul 4 x 7 around town no problem. Thats a heavy trailer.
It would pull a utility trailer effortlessy. If your doing any towing just change the transaxle fluid every 20,000 miles. Which is cheap & easy. Good Luck!

i recommend public storage. they tend to sell these things cheap. i have an 8 pin (good to have options) that didn't require any rewiring. it works well with my trailer, my hitch light, and any other trailer i've tried. it's powered off the 12v battery. it only cost me less than $40
