Production Chevrolet Volt won't look like concept

    The production version of the Chevrolet Volt won't look like the popular concept by the same name, General Motors Vice Chairman Bob Lutz said during a dinner event with members of the press yesterday evening.

    GM had hoped to keep the Volt's exterior true to the concept, but wind tunnel tests proved the design was anything but aerodynamic — an essential characteristic for a vehicle that focus on efficiency.

    Lutz characterized the wind tunnel tests as a "cruel disappointment." He joked engineers could have probably "put it in the wind tunnel backwards" and got less wind resistance.

    The Volt, like most GM products, was all about bling. It was a concept car meant for PR and image building. It wasn't meant to be built and sold to the public.

    Now GM people are scrambing because Lutz actually intends to build the Volt! Who knew?

    Oh look, more stalling. Who's surprised? Another few years to see a production model? Yeah, I'm still not surprised.

    GM is 100% committed to putting off building the Volt, but they're also 100% committed to advertising it today as if you could walk down to the local dealer and buy one. I heard 2 ads on the radio just this morning for this technological wonder. I see ads on TV. I still don't see them driving around.

    I'm starting to wonder if they're going for a record on advertising dollars spent on a car that isn't going to market. Clearly those advertising dollars are meant to boost their image, not to sell more Volts.

    I can only assume that it's actually a genius part of their marketing effort. I mean seriously, what company engineers such a machine without testing one of its most basic functions? One person at their company might be stupid enough to not consider wind resistance in optimizing fuel economy, but their whole team of engineers and designers? Not likely.

    I say it was designed that way for a reason: Built-in stall, so they can keep marketing! :p

    oh ya... the volt... oooh wee... im sooo excited...*yawn*...

    but then again, the scenario is that....Toyota will sit, do nothing in response, be beaten by gm to the punch...

    or they will do what they did in 1993 when the big three started the Supercar Project (that is what spurred Toyota to develop the Prius) and be first AND better to the market...

    i do welcome the intro of the volt. because i am confident that it will hasten Toyota's counter product to the market... i have already set aside financing for the Plug in 2010 Prius...

    Oh man, that's not good.

    I'm sure this WON'T be a delay. The actual drive systems are what will be the deciding factors to a 2010 debut.

    After the charge from plugging it wears out (after about 40 miles or so), the car generates its own electricity using a small gas engine.

    Nope,

    If they took the plug away the reporter would have said:
    "What makes the Volt different from most hybrids is only its gas motor is used to charge the batteries..."
    Meaning that nothing else is used to charge batteries (plug, regen brakes, etc)

    The quote you post here says:
    "What makes the Volt different from most hybrids is its gas motor is only used to charge the batteries..."
    Meaning that the gas motor is not used for any other purpose (such as driving the wheels, powering the A/C compressor, etc)

    I think you misunderstood. The gas motor is only used to charge the batteries. That doesn't say it's the only way to charge the batteries...

    What on Earth is that based on, as it surely isn't any sort of verifiable fact.

    GM wants to sell every Volt it can to amoritize the costs, I'm most definitely sure of that.


    And if the customer decides after experiencing a Volt that they'd rather have a Hybrid Malibu, an Aveo or a Cobalt, is that the worst thing that could ever have happened? Nah.
