So I got a Prius with the Smart key system and my significant other also has the other Smartkey fob. When I get in the car normally it works fine, but when we both get in the car (I get in the driver door and she gets in the passenger door) and use the smart key to enter our respective doors it mostly gives this really long beep, but not all the time. I thought maybe she was hitting the button after I opened it, but she said she isn't hitting any buttons.

Why is this happening? I can't figure it out :(

With the default door action, you should get two beeps: The first beep when you open the driver's door, and a second beep when she opens the passenger door. This is because the SKS only unlocks the driver's door when activated from that position. When your SO pulls on the passenger handle, it is still locked. If she has her SKS fob, then it will unlock, giving another beep.

Are you sure the long beep isn't two beeps very close together? Try changing the order of opening the doors and see what happens.

Why not set it up to unlock all doors when the driver's door handle is touched? The procedure is in the Owner's Manual.

I visit high crime areas often enough that setting it that way would make me very nervous.

I'm not sure it would help either, cause she'll still have the key on her anyways.

Having the key fob in your possession shouldn't make the car beep; only unlocking will make it beep. That said, I agree with not unlocking all of the doors when you open the driver's door. I kept mine with the default setting, and I don't live in or visit high crime areas.

So we tested it last night and just opening the passenger side door with the smart key will create a long beep. We started with the car locked both times. I think I would describe it as a long external beep. We tried it a couple times and it happened a couple times. Then we tried it again later at the grocery store and it didn't beep at all. It is really strange.

It is like the car is Lassie, but I don't know what it's trying to tell us.

    Operator error?

SKS Procedure: The black button on the door is used to lock the car (ONLY). The car unlocks by inserting your hand in the door handle or squeezing the switch on the hatch. The fob is not normally removed from your pocket or purse.

The SKS only gives the long beep only when you attempt to LOCK the car by pressing the black door button and the car refuses to lock. There are three conditions in which the car will refuse to lock by pressing the button; a fob has been left inside the car, a door/hatch is not fully closed, or the car is not off.

This is correct. I thought the OP had already eliminated this possibility, but in review, while it was suggested, I don't know that it was eliminated.

Even I push the black button once in a while when unlocking the door, usually when I'm very distracted. It makes the long beep described.

Well, if person #1 gets in the car and #2 presses the button on the door handle then you'll get exactly that behavior yeah.

Took me a while to figure out why I couldn't lock my new car (left the spare key in the glovebox).

Yeah, I think she must be brushing up against the button after she opens the door. It happened even when I didn't have the door open and she was opening the door, but it doesn't happen every time. She denies pushing the button though.

    Thanks for your help.

Yeah, she didn't push it, just "brushed" it. :) You're so tactful, that'll make her feel loads better! Ha! Actually, in some old cars you had to push the button to unlatch the door, and even with many doors in buildings you have to turn the knob or push the handle (that is, do something) to unlatch, so this might seem a little backwards. Maybe that will help...

Unlock all doors from the driver's door

I would love to do just that, but I can't find it in the manual. Can you give me a clue? I am obviously clueless!

If there is a key in the car and you try to lock it from the outside with one of the external lock buttons the car only gets mad; it will still listen to key-presses on the transceiver, however. I never had a problem with it until I got married this past May. Finally my wife has become very aware of the location of her car key whenever we go places (she used to leave it in her bag or jacket, which often wound up staying in the car).

    ~ dan ~

I'm gonna go outside and reconfigure my car to unlock all doors with a touch of the driver's door. Right now.

The manual instructs that you must "Switch the Power Switch to 'off'" then wait until the indicator on the key surface goes off. Then press (what the manual has a picture of) a little audio speaker with three sound waves coming off of it, at the same time as you hold down the lock button on the FOB.

I don't really understand this. I've been trying to do it, but I don' think i'm doing it right. I turn the car off. (I guess that's what they mean by switching the power switch off?) and then I don't know where that other button is, because I haven't seen any button that looks like that, if someone knew were it was or which button it is, that would be great. I've been trying to press the audio volume button while i'm pressing the lock button on the key, but nothing happens.

I have found the answer in another thread, posted by Wayne.
The one we are looking for is number 2.

    Here's the procedure:

CHANGING THE DOORS TO BE UNLOCKED

Each time you push the lock button
together with the panic button on the
smart key for about 5 seconds with the
hybrid system off, the setting for door
    unlocking will change as follows:

    1. Driver’s door unlocking mode: If you
    perform smart unlocking operation on
the driver’s door, it will unlock. Performing
    unlocking operation on the
front passenger’s door or back door
will unlock all the doors. When the
system switches to this mode, one
beep sounds inside the vehicle and two
    beeps sound three times.

    2. All doors unlocking mode: Performing
    smart unlocking operation on either
front door or back door will unlock all
the doors. When the system switches
to this mode, one beep sounds inside
the vehicle and two beeps sound twice.

    3. Single door unlocking mode: The
driver’s door or back door on which
    you perform smart unlocking operation
    will unlock. However, performing unlocking
    operation on the front passenger’s
door will unlock all the doors.
When the system switches to this
mode, one beep sounds inside the vehicle
    and two beeps sound once.

so yeah, reply to an ancient post here - I've finally figured out why I couldn't show people how cool the smartkey was! I'd say "check it out, it locks with this button 'beeeeeeeeep' " - "So I push this black button and 'beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee' -"hmm that is weird" - so apparently my wife just left her keys in the car.

So my question is how in the world does the car know that the keys are in the car instead of in my pocket? I mean the ones in my pocket are only like 3 feet away from the set in the car. How does it know!!!

There are separate sensors in the doors and inside the car. The sensor inside will not pick up the fob if you are outside.

hmmph. Interesting. OK, so my next question is by what mechanism does the inside of the door handle (the outer handle - when unlocking via SKS) - sense your hand? I've played around with it and you can touch all over the outside of the handle and it will do nothing, but as soon as you put one finger back behind there, it unlocks. My assumption is that there is a low voltage current running behind there much like a touch lamp, but it feels like plastic and I can't see any metal band or anything. I don't think it is optical because weather would cloud it and not be able to take the beating from constant movement. I know this is prob. on the forum somewhere, but just thought i would ask in conversation. thx
