    Hi Gang,

As many have mentioned, the Prius does not come with an automatic door lock function. At least, I could not get it on my 2007 model. I purchased the Coastal modification kit and it is programmed to lock the doors when the car reaches 15 mph. However, what I really want is a system that works like my Oldsmobile does. That is, lock all the doors automatically when I put the car in drive, and unlock all the doors when I put the car in park. This is a mode I feel safest with.

I'm pretty sure I could get this to work in combination with the kit I already have from Coastal, by adding some diodes and resistors. The park and drive switches are both momentary so the basic function is already what I need. Has anyone done this or do you have any other similar ideas for this concept?

    Thanks in advance
    Steve

Are you aware that your Prius' doors will open any time you pull the levers, regardless of whether they're locked? I'm just not sure if auto-locking is that helpful to you, and especially not if you get in a disabling accident...

Move to Australia. I never feel I need my doors locked when I'm driving.

    Automatic Lock

There are instructions on Darell's site at http://www.evnut.com/prius_auto_lock.htm for installing a circuit that will lock the doors automatically at start up.

For the Classic Prius, Coastal sold a circuit that locked the doors when the driver's seatbelt was connected and unlocked them when the seatbelt was disconnected.

i automatically lock the doors when i sit down in the car... but that's just habit i guess. no need to unlock before opening the door, as already mentioned.

I bought the Coastal modification that locks the doors automatically. It does that part of the task fine. The problem is that when I get out of the car and then go to get something out of the rear door, then I need to go back and unlock all the doors again. It isn't a huge problem, but a minor annoyance that happens ever day. I was just wondering if someone had already done this unlicking circuit already.

ad78 -- I'll call my dealer. I didn't think of that. I wonder if they have an add-on or if they have a programming capability. Did they tell you?

    Thanks much

@satwood - my saleswoman told me that its a matter of programming. No add-ons.

Some Toyota models do just what you want. My 05 Avalon works that way. Doors all lock when you put the car in drive and all un-lock when you put the car in park.

I don't think that info is out there for the public... But if someone does have this info, that'd be great! Otherwise, I may just purchase the Coastal Mod...

My brand new 08 lists this as a customizable option in the manual. In fact, it shows the default state as being on for both shift to P unlocks all doors, and shift to anything other than P locks all doors. Despite these options being listed as on by default, neither of these functions are actually on. I'm hoping the dealer will be willing to set this for free for me, since I've only had the car for a week. (I guess we'll see.)

My buddy's '08, package 2 does this automatically. When he put it into anything except park, all 4 doors lock. But they do not unlock when the car is put back into park, or turned off. He said he got it that way, he didn't have to request it from the dealer...

I went there today to pick up my license plates and asked if they could do it. They told me that I needed to have both of the keys as they needed to be reprogrammed as part of the process of adding the auto-lock feature when shifting in/out of park. Is this true? I couldn't get it done because I didn't have them both with me. I'm curious as to why both keys would be needed to change an option that seems to have nothing to do with them. (And I do have the SKS system, by the way.)

Huh. Whatever logic board is required for this auto-lock stuff, it probably says "Not for 2004 model."...

My understanding is that the vehicle is already capable of this without any additional hardware. (It's a 2008 model w/SKS.) It's listed in the manual as a customizable option.

but theory has it that, in a severe accident an unlocked door could pop open wherever you live;)

Is that an option on 2007 models as well? Or new to 2008?
