    Green Car Congress: BYD Auto Introduces Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle in Detroit; On Sale This Year in China

    BYD announce that adding the 60 mile EV range to a standard gasoline only vehicle adds about $6,000 to the cost of the car, according to the article.

    Key points:
    • 60 mile EV range
    • Lithium iron phosphate (for inherent safety)
    • 120,000 mile battery life
    • 50% recharge in 10 minutes
    • 1 litre, 50 kW gasoline engine takes over after battery
    • HEV mode remains after battery depleted
    • Anticipate selling this model in USA in 3-5 years

    It's interesting to see that these developing countries (China, India), that are really struggling with their pollution and growth of population are open and actively seeking new means for more environmental friendly solutions.

    On the other hand the developed countries are not so keen on this area.

    Maybe it is easier to grow and change when you are growing and changing anyway?
    I wish them every success, it looks a little like a HSD with a power split device and all.

    It's equally interesting how many patents / copyrights China is willing to violate. China has a ton of potential, but no business/ governmental character/integrity. So their progress is made in many instances on the backs of other country's intelectual property rights. Most refer to that as stealing. Still, we buy their stuff. So perhaps that means it doesn't matter to many.
