It's the only place where Hell freezes over! :D Yes, there is a place named "Hell" in Michigan. Go check the maps for yourself!

Hell is basically a small tourist trap and I've been on bike rides (bicycle) that ride through it. I think that I still have one of the tee shirts that says "I rode through Hell". It doesn't take long to ride through Hell, for all those bad boys and girls who know that they're going to end up there sooner or later. Also, newspapers and other media all over the world call Hell in the winter during cold snaps and ask them if Hell has frozen over.

Yes, Jack, that is a very cool link! I didn't know you ride a bike? Got one last year, first time riding with spouse on the C&O Canal. Spouse had "The Whipple" surgery last June for bile duct cancer. So far, CAT scan came back clean and spouse is preparing to run more marathons! So, I really hadn't time to do much biking but am hoping to do so this summer. First, I gotta take care of this hammer toe on the foot as it has been giving me fits off and on for the past couple of months. CRNP said it was tendonitis but the inserts for shoes, and NSAI didn't do a whole lot so now I am off to the podiatrist next week to see what can be done. I hate being inside limping when I much rather be outside!

Anyway, we lived in Michigan for 2 years. Did you know that there is also a place called "Paradise" and "Tahquamenon Falls" which means "Little Niagara"?

For Paradise this is an informational link:

City of Paradise - Pure Michigan Travel

For: Tahquamenon Falls, this is a gorgeous picture of the falls

    Michigan U.P. Waterfalls, Tahquamenon Falls

Yes, Michigan is beautiful! What wonderful memories! No humidity, and since it so far north it stays daylight until about 10 p.m. in the very, very short summer months.

If you love cold weather, (50 below zero), and all the snow related activities, (and I don't mean car accidents! :)), by all means take a vacation either in the summer or the winter and enjoy yourselves! There is so much to do and see!

They even have a wine manufacturer up there believe it or not!

Hell gets a lot of visitors during Halloween. I should go there this year.

All this talk about Hell and no mention of Climax. I always thought that was a great name for a city. You should be able to combine Climax and Paradise into one trip. Incidentally, we live fairly close to Paris. One of our friends likes to say she was married in Paris. She neglects to add Michigan to the Paris.

Hammer toe can be corrected without surgery. The type of yoga that I am currently studying works at correcting things like that that affect the feet. Too bad you don't live in the area, I could help you out with that but it's not something you can do over the internet. Surgery sucks, especially when it comes to the feet. If you go that route, realize going in to it that you'll go through a lot of recovery time and it doesn't fix the underlying problem.

Yeah, I've been a bike rider for a long time and have put, literally, thousands of miles on my bikes. I currently have a Trek road bike (28 gears, yes you use all 28 on the long rides). Look up bike rides in your area that last a week and you camp out at night, they're great vacations and I always come away from them thoroughly and ironically very relaxed.

Lastly, thanks to global warming, Michigan is turning in to quite a wine country.

Wow, yoga can help do that? I might need to check that out.

When my family was younger with 2 kids in tow, we went to Mackinaw Island and rode tandem bikes all the way around on the only state road. Of course, since the state park now owns all of Mackinaw Island, no vehicles are allowed on the island. Years ago, most of the estate was owned by the "rich" but I am not sure about famous. Anyway, when they moved the "fort" so to speak to the Macinknaw Island that's when the goverment took the island over. And so when the "fort" was finally reverted back to the main land where the "Mighty Mac" bridge is, they just didn't allow any vehicles to be driven on the only state highway which encompasses the entire island which is about 10 miles. It's really a wonderful state road on which to ride bikes, or run, or skate or whatever because there are no vehicles. (They do have an emergency vehicle and mail truck but I think that's about it.) The homes are leased back to the owners families for 99 years at a time so that the land will be "kept" in the family for the next generation. The only time someone can be buried on the island is if they were born on it.

And oh, the only way to get to the island is by water ferry or boat.

This too is a wonderful place to visit or stay at in one of the hotels there for the summer vacation.

Much of Mackinac Island is privately owned. Even so, powered vehicles are not allowed during the summer, with special exceptions for emergency vehicles and some construction equipment. In the winter snowmobiles are allowed. Horses and bicycles are the main form of transportation. UPS delivers with a horse drawn wagon. The old fort is still on the island, but there is also a replica fort on the mainland in Mackinaw City. Note the spellings; this is not a mistake on my part. The spellings are Mackinac Island, The Mackinac Bridge, and Mackinaw City. They are all pronounced Mackinaw, but the original spelling comes from the French. You can get to the island by ferry or boat, airplane, or by snowmobile in the winter once the ice is thick enough. Note that they lose people and vehicles through the ice, so you might want to think about that option. In one case a house was lost through the ice, but that's a story in itself.

Thanks for letting me know about the correct spelling.

When we were living in Michigan back between 92 & 94, we heard that a Volkswagon bug blew off the bridge. Don't remember if there were any survivors or not, but it is the world's highest suspension bridge. So I know that they close the bridge off when it is too windy.

It was 1989, and the car that blew off the bridge was a 1987 Yugo. Leslie Pluhar was driving, and no, she didn't survive. It was the first car to make the 150 foot trip to the water. In 1997 an SUV drove off the bridge, but that one is considered to be a possible suicide.

do they still offer pilots to drive you across the bridge if you cant handle the open grating?

been over the bridge a few times... i remember once it was a pretty calm day, winds only in the 50-60 mph range...

Yes they do. When the wind goes up, they lower the speed limit on the bridge. For big vehicles or really nasty conditions, they group the vehicles into convoys and lead them across. If you are a real wimp, you can get a driver to drive while you curl up into the fetal position on the back seat.

I have to add a reply to this topic, you know you're from Michigan when......

You get beaten by a division II school in football, Appalachian State University, who then goes on to win their third National Championship in a row !!!!!! :D:D

p.s. For those of you who still don't know where Appalachian State is, it's in Boone, N.C. Not my alma mater, but we sure are proud of 'em around here...

Thanks for the correction again! I must be getting old or something! :D

I remember driving across the bridge, but I don't remember if it had grating or not. I was too busy looking out at the lake while going across!

the center lanes are open grates with a magnificent view of the water below you. the fact that the bridge rises 150 feet to the center give one the impression of flying since at first you get a pretty good view of the underside of the bridge on the opposite end as you are going up to the middle

this was done in response to "galloping gertie" the old Tacoma Narrows bridge that started swaying in the wind in the 40's, started bouncing around like a errant jump rope and fell into the straits. they later found out that the roadbed (new ultralight concrete at the time) acted like a sail, hence the open road bed that allows the wind to pass thru.

as it is, the bridge sways about 18 feet back and forth, but over 5 miles you hardly notice it.
