The best 'fat pills" ???? Why of course it's the one you don't eat.;)

Krispy Creme must be an East Coast thing.

Just a couple of years ago they came to Sacramento. The "monumental event" was so freakingly hyped like it was a not-yet-in-theaters-hollywood-blockbuster. So much so that even the local news channels bit . . . showing displaced East Coasters lining-up hours before the 'grand opening.'
The lines quickly disappeared, and so too did Krispy Creme. So what was all the hype about?

According to Wikipedia, they are failing miserably in other places too.

If I must eat a fat pill, it will be from a local mom & pop place, not some overhyped corporate doughnut.

Home made cider doughnuts are best. Make them by the hundreds and they still won't last an hour! Since that's a lot of work though, fresh cider doughnuts from an apple orchard near where I live work pretty well.

I'm still a sucker for DD's Boston Kreme, but only rarely find myself walking in their doors.

    Shipley's.

Just because they're the only place I've found that can make a decent chocolate-filled donut.

KK's are good if and only if you get them when they're super-hot. After that, they become just regular old donuts.

We have Shipley's and Krispy Kreme and Dunkin donuts here. Thumbs down for Dunkin', KK gets a thumbs up for their maple glazed. Best donuts in Nashville are (or were) the Golden Donut ("simply delicious, simply the best" was their motto) and they were until they mysteriously closed a few weeks ago. Fadi if you're reading this, we miss you!

    Speaking of Doughnuts...

Anyone make baked donuts? Got a good recipe to share? They make a special baking pan for them. I love donuts but not the fat content. (sigh)

The Rolling Pin in San Bruno, CA. A dozen chocolate covered, custard filled donut holes and a half gallon of coffee is a great way to start the day.

Dunkin Doughnuts used to be a favorite, as they made them fresh daily. Now they are made in bulk and shipped out of a single location to the many stores and franchises..

Mister Doughnut was popular in orlando for 30 years but they have since closed their doors leaving DD & KK as the main compeditors in the retail doughnut market.

KK has a location in Daytona Beach where they still make em fresh and you can watch it happen.

Becides with the marvolous invention called a microwave and 5-10 seconds you have a warm KK at hand....

Did you know a bagel w/cream cheese has more fat in it than a glazed doughnut.;)

Boy HyCam, you Cops sure know your doughnuts!

There's one place for doughnuts I like better than KK.
Tobie's bakery/diner in Hinckly MN. It's been a favorite truck stop between Duluth and the Twin Cities for 50+ years, widely known for their cinnamon and carmel rolls. Their doughnuts are bar none the best ever. Not the healthiest ever...but definately the tastiest.
They are not a chain and you cannot get these anywhere else.

The ones you can buy at the Royal Adelaide show are the best, I know this because the voice on the loud speaker at the dounut shop told me so.
Hot American dounuts, making baking going all the while. The world's best hot American dounuts ...

Yeah, I'll try to find my cider doughnut recipe. I haven't made them for a couple years and this should get me to do it again! You don't use a special pan or anything though... just roll 'em and fry 'em. Yum! As for fat, what good is life if you can't enjoy it? No fat-free anything for me unless there wasn't fat in it to begin with!

I can vouch for both the chicory coffee and the fresh beignets here...yum! :D

    New Orleans
    Cafe Du Monde
    800 Decatur St.
    (504) 525-4544

Likely the oldest doughnuteria in America, this French Quarter coffee shop has been serving chicory-spiked, New Orleans-style coffee and fresh beignets since 1862. Cafe Du Monde’s flagship location on Decatur Street was unscathed by Katrina and continues to fry some of the most flavorful French-style doughnuts around. These puffy squares of airy dough come crisp and warm and support a hearty mountain of powdered sugar—all while proudly serving as the official state doughnut of Louisiana.

Most donuts are soaked with trans fats, in the US at least, and are about the worst thing you can possibly eat.

There is good news from New York City's ban on trans fats in restaurants. Entemann's and Friehohofer's products, serving the NYC and other areas, are trans-fat free.

Read the labels before you pig out on donuts. If it say's "partially hydrogenated oil," put it back on the shelf. If it's from a bakery, assume it's full of trans fats until you can assure yourself otherwise.

    Re: Speaking of Doughnuts...

I do have a recipe for, not only a baked donut, but a vegan baked donut!
They are fabulous, have no saturated or trans fats, and are guilt-free. Okay, maybe not FREE, but less guilt. Yeah, that's it... less guilt. :)

    Baked Donuts

    Dry:
1 cup flour (I use whole wheat pastry flour, but plain old all purpose works)
1/2 cup sugar (I use organic sugar)
    1 & 1/2 tsp Baking Powder
    1/4 tsp salt
    1/4 tsp Nutmeg
    Pinch or shake of Cinnamon

    Wet:
    1/2 cup Soy milk
1/2 tsp Apple Cider Vinegar (lemon juice works in a pinch)
    1/2 tsp Vanilla
    Egg replacer for 1 egg (Ener'G brand, use 1 & 1/2 tsp)
4 Tbls Earth Balance margarine (non-hydronated, vegan, no trans fats)

Put all the wet ingredients in a saucepan, and warm slowly until the Earth Balance is all melted, and it's all warm, not hot.
Mix the wet and dry together until just combined. It will form a very soft dough.
Spoon into (ungreased) nonstick donut pans.
Bake for 12 minutes at 350F. They won't be brown, but that's okay.
Invert the pan over a cutting board or cooling rack. I suspend mine over the cutting board, using measuring cups. When they cool, they release from the pan.

Makes about a dozen real size donuts, or 20 mini donuts, depending on your pan.
