I just bought a prius on saturday... it was used... they only had one key/remote to give me.
My car has the smart key option... the remote has a silver toyota logo on the back....
    my questions are....
1)can you use the small key inside the remote to get inside the car if the remote battery fails?
    2) how much will it cost me to get a new key and smart remote from toyota?
    3) if i buy a smart key and remote on ebay, how do i get the little key inside the remote cut so it will work my car? how do i program the remote?
Thanks in advance for any input.

    >> yes. That is the whole point of having it.
    2) how much will it cost me to get a new key and smart remote from toyota?
    >> I would say at least $250 if you still have one remote. If you lost the one you have, it will be at least $400 since they would need to find the code that is unique to your Prius. So get another while you still got one.
    3) if i buy a smart key and remote on ebay, how do i get the little key inside the remote cut so it will work my car? how do i program the remote?
    >> Cutting is the key is no different from any other home key. Any key smith can do it, I guess. For programming the remote, you need to go to a dealer. Make sure you get a remote that has never been programmed before from eBay. Less surprises/problems.

Do you know how many of the keys come with the car when the cars are brand new?

We just bought a new Prius. On our test drive the salesman said it cost $300 to get a replacement smartkey. When we closed the deal on the car, he said $400.

Hopefully I will never have to find out.

I called a dealerships parts department... a guy there said the key was laser cut, and had to be done somewhere else.. do you know if that is true?
also.. what is involved in programming a new remote?
If i buy on ebay, will any dealership program the remote and have the key cut for me?

No, it's cut like any other key. Be careful of SKS fobs from eBay: some work, and some don't. You have to make sure you get one that is correct for your type of Prius.
