I was having my Prius serviced today (Nav update, brake light switch campaign), and came across this information for those interested:

To get the Prius to maintain a steady idle (such as for emission testing) follow this procedure:

The following must be done within 60 seconds:

    Ignition on (not READY mode)
    Vehicle in Park
    Step on accelerator pedal twice
    Place vehicle in Neutral
    Step on accelerator pedal twice
    Place vehicle in Park
    Step on accelerator pedal twice
    Place car in READY mode

An warning icon in the MFD will be displayed.
With less than 60% throttle applied idle is 1500 RPM (approx)
With more than 60% throttle applied idle is 2250 RPM (approx)

There is you Easter egg for the day Priuschatters!

Sorry to hear that you require emissions testing on your Prius; lots of States have exempted them. A simpler way to get the Prius to idle is to put it in READY mode, leave it in PARK, and press down slightly on the accelerator.

Or just put the defroster on and the temp on max heat
But not sure if it will idle faster when you step on the gas???/ Have to try that one out....

But not as much fun as giving the garage guy the first way of getting it to idle

That won't work. It usually will work if you depress the brake fully and then press the accelerator pedal.

    Idle...?

    that's when the engine......

    ah, no it isn't.......

    i forget!

    LOL!

    ps.
power up the car, leave it in park, and floor the gas pedal... mine just gradually ramps up the rpm, probably to somewhere in the 2-3000 range. what else is a computer to do when you ask it to do something silly.... :p

Then keep it floored...eventually it'll stop reving at all (when the SOC gets high). Also, you really have to keep your foot on the brake to get it to force-charge for long.

Since December 2003 when I purchased my car, I haven't been required to have an emissions test in VA.
