I realize that running on battery is innefficient, but I think the engine wastes a lot of gas on cold, no load startups. On the cold mornings here in NorCal I go into EV mode immediately. This allows me to back out of may driveway, drive out of my short low speed neighborhood streets, (about 1/10th of a mile). Then when I get on a main artery I give it a little gas to start the engine. This seems to help my early morning mileage. I think it helps because the engine warms up quicker when it is under load. Yes, I use a bit of battery, but not that much. When I let the engine start normally, it would take me a long time to make up for that initial wasted fuel used for the cold start.

One more comment. BLOCK YOUR GRILL, BLOCK YOUR GRILL, BLOCK YOUR GRILL. It is cheap, passive, and makes a significant differerence in your mpg. I blocked my lower grill only. It gets a bit warm some days, so I am worried about blocking the entire grill.

I just drove our 08 Touring (Pkg 6) from Temecula to Los Angeles. The car started with about 550 miles on the odo. I got an average of 45.0 mpg for the 100 mile trip about 97 of which was on the freeway with no traffic doing low 70s. A lot better than the 27mpg I get from my wrx and with regular gas, too.

Just filled my tank for the first time on Sunday, May 11th with two pips left on the gas gauge. Gas pump said 7.8 gals. I had driven 360 miles since the dealer filled my tank before I drove off the lot. Gas tank calculation= 360/7.8=45.9 mpg
MFD said 47.1. Total miles driven at that point was 467.

When I received the car, the odometer had 107 miles on it, and the MFD registered 28.6 mpg. The dealer did not reset the MFD at that time, so the 47.1 MFD stated above averages in the 107 miles at 28.6 mpg that someone else put on the car.

I expected to have a larger gap between the MFD and my gas tank fill/odometer average (with the gas tank being higher)... since I was getting pretty high mpg during the first tank to bring the 28.6 mpg average up to 47.1 on the MFD.

Guess I'll have a better idea of the discrepancy between the MFD and the gas tank next time I fill up. So far, the new tank after 89 miles is 52.7 mpg on the MFD.

And as someone mentioned earlier on this post, I know I will get a more accurate reading over many fills.

Temps ranged from 50's to 60's for this two week period of driving.
