This is the answer from Toyota
"Thank you for contacting Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc.

We apologize for any discrepancy in your 2008 Prius Owner's Manual and we appreciate the opportunity to clarify the operation of the door locks on your vehicle.

The 2008 Prius does not have automatic door locks and there is no way to link them with either the vehicle's speed or with the position of the shift lever.

All information and specifications in this manual are current at the time of printing. However, because of Toyota's policy of continual product improvement, we reserve the right to make changes at any time without notice."

There is no way to do it at this time unless you use some third party item which may screw up your warranty.

You know what really sucks? As of right now, the official North American Toyota Prius web site lists automatic door locks as a standard feature for all 2008 Priuses.

I wonder if false advertising comes into play here. Did anybody keep their window sticker?

My 04 locks automatically if I don't open the door after I unlock the door.

Um... I only had my '08 Prius for 13 days now so I may not know what I'm talking about...

But I simply leave the headlight to "on" and it automatically turns off when I turn off my car, and back on again when I turn it on.

Do you mean you wanted a sensor that detects when it's getting dark out and automatically turns on the headlights?

    A few things...
Thanks for doing the research on the auto-lock stuff. I was wondering about those default settings...mine didn't do that!
I am bummed about the headlight deal too. My Matrix (which my husband drives now) has the auto headlights and now I'm used to it. I suppose it's just a matter of reprogramming myself to get used to turning them on/off manually again. (Spoiled...maybe)
I have had my '08 Prius for 16 days now and today I turned it on, after already haven driven it this morning, and the screen is totally blank. It kinda' freaked me out, so I turned it off and restarted...still blank. It's frustrating b/c I cannot operate some things and b/c I don't want a lemon!! I was confident about the decision to buy this car (my first new one ever and quite pricey for me), but I hope I don't grow to regret it. I am taking it tomorrow...hope it's something easy like a fuse, but should a 16-day old car blow fuses already??

I have done this, but I wonder if it will have any effect on the battery/batteries? Does anyone know if this is fine to do all the time?

On my 08, the headlights are not automatic. If I leave the switch set to on, they stay on all the time, even when I turn off the car. They only shut off when I open the car door. Then they turn on again when I start the car, assuming the headlight switch is still set to "on". I know this may be splitting hairs, but I've had American made cars that were fully automatic, reacting to ambient light. With the exception of Canadian models, I don't think the Prius does that.

My wife is very disappointed that this auto locking feature was not an option on the Prius. She had gotten used to it in our 05 Corolla that was recently totaled by a red-light runner. We are beat up from the accident, but upbeat because we got a Prius.

We bought our Magnetic Grey Prius on Monday and in our Manual the "Auto Lock" feature is no longer listed on page 488 as a dealer customizable option.

We love our new Prius even if it doesn't Auto Lock.

Yes, a sensor the detects when it is getting dark and automatically turns on the headlights AND turns them off when it gets light. The is a fairly basic feature of many (maybe most) new cars these days including Toyota models.

I wish my 05 would lock itself at a certain speed for when I forget. Is there an option for it?

Did anyone ask Toyota Headquarters to send out a bulletin to all dealers indicating the misprint so the dealers can break the bad news to any customer who bothers to read the manual?...

I have my window sticker right here (12/07 build date) on a Package 6.
It doesn't say anything about automatic door locks - only:

"Pwr Door Locks & Wndws w/Dr Auto Up/Down"

The original manual for my '08 Prius lists many different options for automatic door locking and unlocking, and the paper manual matched what was available for download from toyotaownersonline.com, the official download site for manuals. Now, when I go to download a chapter from the manual, every chapter comes up with two links which appear to be two different editions of the manual. (I'm attaching screen shots of parts of page 489 from both.) The point, is that Toyota seems to have created a new edition of the 2008 Prius manual which removes references to automatic door locks.

that is ridiculous, this should just be a standard feature, especially for a car in this price range. Im really thinking of getting that coastal kit myself.

i love my prius, but the two thing's that bother me the most are 1.) the gas tank bladder/fill ups 2.) no sunroofs options 3.) the autolocks/lamps..although autolamps isn't very common on most compact cars..so i can let that slide.

Which car have you owned in the past that have the "must have" features you say it is "ridiculous" the Prius doesn't have and also have a Hybrid drive system or by other means achieve the same economy and emissions standards for a similar or lower price? Can you think of any? Me either.

I think it's real funny when North America has the worlds cheapest Prius.
Cheapest Prius here is $37,400AU and the iTech is $46,700AU.

My headlights will turn off when I shut down the car and the switch is pretty convenient.

    BTW, that is 3 things.
