10,000 mile checkup question?

    I just passed the 10,000 mile mark on my 07 Prius. A google search indicates that the oil/filter should be changed, the tires rotated, and the brake pads inspected at 10k miles. However, the "maintenance required" indicator light has not come on yet (like it did promptly when I passed 5,000 miles).

    Can someone tell me if a service is required at 10k miles or not, and if so, why my maintenance light might not have come on?

    When exactly was the last service done? The light will come on again based on the mileage at the last reset, not at any particular fixed mileage.

    Anyway, the service is indicated at 10K, regardless of whether the light activates.

    First service was about 5200 miles. I'm at about 10,175 now. Sounds like I need to be scheduling an appointment with the dealer.

    Look in your "Passport" that came with the car manual. It details what needs to get done every 5000 miles. Do what it says and you will maintain your warranty. You don't have to do what the dealer suggests, and many will suggest all kinds of expensive and non-essential work. If you don't want to spend the big bucks with the dealer to change air filters when that time comes, they are both easy to do yourself.

    So I am planning on changing my own oil which will be a first for me. I usually just dropped my old cars off at a jiffylube, but I don't trust them with the Prius and I don't want to pay the crazy dealer prices.

    My question is this: What do I need to do to prove I have kept up with the oil changes in case I have to get something repaired under the warranty?

    I would suggest that you fill out the date and mileage in the Service Passport, and sign it. If you would like to tape/staple any receipts for oil/filters to the page, that is fine, too.

    Definitely keep the receipts. It's the only thing approaching proof that you have.
