Lightest 17" wheels

Should I take that as a vote to go with the Centerline Vicking rims instead? Actually, those tires are from the original Toyota photo, but I had to play with them because the wheels in original photo are skeiwed. The wheels looked like crud if I tried to skiew tham to match the tires, so I decided to just make them into simple ovals.

The Centerline Vikings would look like this.

today I weighed my stock 16" uk wheels with tyres 195 55 16
15kg
I also have some Boss 17" 205 40 17
17kg

Whereas 15kg is liftable, 17kg feels heavy

I was just teasing about how the tires looked. The rims looked good but the tires looked really bubble like with smooth sidewalls which is generally how a slick looks. Kinda like this:


I'm just not a fan of big sidewalls unless it's on a truck or a drag car.

I understand it was all due to photoshop but I couldn't help razz ya a bit. Now that we've clear that up, I like the Cenerlines best. Especially if you have to go with a tall tire.

Don't worry, I wasn't offended at all. Now I get what you are saying. You prefer short tires like if I used 20 inch rims withonly about 1 inch of tire sidewall showing.

I have thought about going to 16 inch rims, but don't really want to go any bigger because it would stiffen the ride and I am not a racer, so the handling is OK for me with the taller tires. But I understand, short sidewalls are all the rage these days.

I do like the appearance better than a tall tire but from an efficiency standpoint a taller tire is going to be less efficient if compounds and sidewall construction remains the same. The taller tire will require more energy to turn due to sidewall flex (distortion). This is one of the major reasons people inflate their tires so much higher than the recommended settings. Like you stated though, you comprimise comfort for efficiency with a shorter sidewall.

 

weight difference

i went with centerlines on my prius.

got the bathroom scale out to weigh the old vs new setup:

one stock wheel with hubcap and about half tread tires: 30.8lbs

polished 18x7 centerlines with 205/40/18tires: 38 lbs

soo about a 7lbs difference. . .

gas mileage suffered:

average with stock wheels was 48.5

now i only get 44.5 average

oh well, it still gets double what the old car is getting, and the wheels look good. . .waiting for the lowering springs to come in. . .

 

Not sure about the weight, but these are polycarbonate wheels. They only cost $2k/wheel.
