This was great to learn. I learn something new on PC everyday.

    Thanks!

Nope, no back-up camera. Originally, when I first visited the dealership to inquire about the Prius ad ($21,145), I was told, "There are not many of this particular model." The salesman told me that they didn't have one on the lot, but the last one was coming in in three days, right off the boat from Japan.

He told me that I would not have a camera or 6-disk changer (one cd slot is fine for me and I have XM Radio), which didn't bother me, but didn't mention that I wouldn't get the cargo cover. He actually showed it off on the Prius I test-drove. I thought it was really cool and was disappointed that they had forgotten to put it in the car upon arriving at home. When I called him, he told me it didn't come with mine, but I could buy one for $350. Tom to the rescue with the Ebay link!

No, she seems to have the 2008 "standard" or "base" Prius --- no tonneau cover, no trim rings, no pockets behind the front seats, no cruise control, etc.

The confusion was the number designation of "1220" as an option package, which none of us had ever heard of before Sam told us about it, and EJFB1029 broke the code. As EJFB1029 discovered, "1220" was not an option package but a number designation of the "standard" or "base" Prius (my highlights or annotations are in red):

    base models

Aloha--I am just getting started in this Prius shopping game and have learned tons from you guys, thanks! According to my dealer in Hawaii, he has 3 Base models arriving next week. Despite what one would assume this is NOT America (Toyota USA) and I was told that we can't get some of the same models sold on the mainland. I can have a #3 built for me in Japan and it'll be here in 4 months. Unfortunately, not at a great price, they have no incentive to negotiate...

    Re: base models

Aloha, I have a 2008 package #2 but my daughter has package #3, so they do sell the #3 here. When I bought the salesman told me that other than special orders they don't know what's coming in until the cars are being built (two to three months before they arrive on island). He told me that the cars here do not have the NAV, but who really needs it here?

I assume that you are dealing with Servco which basically has a one price for all policy. I think that any negotiation would come out of the salesman's commission so one of high volume guys/girls may give you a couple of hundred off, but nothing really big.

Interesting about the base models in Hawaii. I bought my #2 in December, wanted that package, felt that the fairly ginormous jumps in price that occurred between 2 and 3 or higher numbered packages made the 2 the best buy overall. But something I noticed at the time, and again recently (just bought an '08 Tacoma 4x4 to replace my gas-hog and troublesome Jeep Wrangler), while browsing the dozen or so Prii on the lot was that all but one were more expensive packages, #3 or higher. Getting the base models, or even the #2s is tricky around here. I asked the dealer why that was and he said that they just take what they can get and have relatively little trouble selling them.

When I first started shopping the Prius a year ago, that's what I was told. When I finally bought mine in December, the dealer who initially told me there were no packages lower than 2 anywhere in the known universe, offered me a "no package" Prius. I chose a Pkg 2 instead.

    Yay, way to go Sam!

BTW, I think you've answered a question I had regarding the 2008 Base/Standard Prius, namely: Does the 2008 Base/Standard Prius without the tonneau cover (model "1220") nonetheless come with the square cutout brackets behind the rear seat headrests to drop the ends of the tonneau cover into? Apparently the answer is yes.

    Enjoy your Prius.:p

Sam, nice addition, it'll work great....

BTW, which dealership did you go to here in Jax? I previously had a 1998 Toyota Camry and the tranny started slipping at 306,000 miles in overdrive, so I donated to someone else so he could have something to drive (when it's out of overdrive, it works fine for him and he's not driving cross country but between 10 to 15 miles to / from work...)

I ended purchasing an '08 Prius straight off the boat at Ernie Palmer Toyota. I used my family connection at Southeast Toyota to get the 1224 (one up from your 1220) with package #3 and added the leather seats and paid $23,900 (without tax/tag/title fees) on January 17, 2008.

Awesome deal! Good for you. :) I got mine at Coggin Toyota (by the Avenues Mall). I had to wait a few days for it, as it was coming in on a ship from Japan. I still owed some on my Sonata (great car, too, but slurped down the gas) and they worked with me to get excellent financing, so I could afford the monthly payments on the Prius. With the miles I have put on it since I bought it six days ago, I would have been back to gas up twice in my old car. Couldn't be more pleased - not just with the gas, but with everything. What I'm saving in gas & car insurance will more than offset the small increase in my car payment.

What color is yours? I'm sure you are loving it...

Sam.... 70 miles round trip to/from work... 8-(

....Therefore giving up the Camry and filling it up every 5 days to the Prius every 7 or even 9 days (couldn't quite make it to 10 days) is great.

The color of the car is Magnetic Gray with leather interior. (I took an upgrade option on the leather seats that I negotiated with an inside connection at Southeast Toyota Distributors that dealt with the salesman at Ernie Palmer that made sense for me...)

Pictures to follow on the Newbie photo post tomorrow, perhaps.
