Do any of you experienced Prius drivers/owners have any advice for a newbie who is about to drive his Prius off the lot this afternoon. (We are so excited . Both my wife and I are not able to sleep).

How do we break it in?

What have you done with your Prius that you wished you had done the very first day you got it?

    Thanks,

    Matt

Welcome to ownership of a simply fabulous car. Just follow the manuals advice and don't floor it or brake extra heavy for the first few weeks. Other than that, it just drives.

I have just booked mine in for its 30,000km service and am expecting the same $100 and 1 hr turnaround as all the previous.

Tap into this site once every now and then and just enjoy the car and the fuel savings (My Avg: 4.9 ltr/100km).

Read and take with you the delivery checklist:
    Prius Pick-up Checklist
Everything still applies except maybe the valet cards (and they are available online).

Sit in the car on the dealer's lot and read through the basic parts of the owner's manual before driving it home. The break-in advice is, basically, don't drive like a maniac in the first 600 miles.

If the last pip on the gas gauge ever starts to flash you must buy gas immediately.

Follow the service items in the scheduled maintenance guide, no more and no less.

On my first day I applied Scotchgard to the seats, and washed and waxed it. Otherwise, nada.

Congratulations, Matt and your DW. By now you have your Prius at home and are still up reading the manual, no doubt. My first advice is to enjoy the car. You'll be learning about it for years, it just keeps getting better.

    Welcome to PriusChat!

BTW, now you have to change your sig...

Drive it like normal. You have the rest of your life to get to know it better, but for now, its just a car. Focus on getting used to its handling, acceleration, and braking quirks. Whatever you do, don't get into an accident early on.

All the previous advice was excellent but it would be a very good idea to pump up your tires to 42 lbs in the front tires and 40 lbs in the rear tires. Really helps with the fuel economy and if you do it now you won't be following up with a "why am I not getting good gas mileage" question in a week or two. (LOL):pound:That way as the car and you break in over the next 5000 mi you will be getting the best mileage possible at all times.

On your way from the dealer, consider turning off the display till you get home. You may find it too distracting to watch the road properly.

    Hi.

I too just got my 2004 Prius two weeks ago. I live in Dominican Republic and I had to import it from Miami since there is no Toyota Dealer selling it here. I have studied a lot on Internet before getting it because their is nobody here knowing about it. I think there is only 10 in the country. I am looking for some of them to get in touch with me to begin a group of Prius Owner to push the Toyota Major Dealer to import it and and be able to repair it.

My first trip to Santo Domingo was very cheap. I had a Suzuki Gran Vitara V6 which I changed for a Prius and I used to burn 2100 pesos. I made it with only 700 pesos, (4.1 galons of premium gasoline) 94 km per galon. I had a very bad day on the corners waiting for the green light, but the Prius saved me of a larger amount of money. I used to wait at least 4 turns to get my green light. I was laughing at my neibhors on the street.
They were looking at me with curiosity because I had my Air conditioned on, with the motor off. ??????.

I am very pleased with my Prius.

Please, if anyone knowing some Dominican Owners, to send me their names, e-mails or phone numbers. It would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Jean.

Your wasting pesos if you buy premium gas. The Prius works better on regular.
