My 04 Prius started making a whirring noise when it's coasting. Step on accelerator and it goes away. Step on brakes and it goes away. It was doing this before its 60,000 checkup. After the checkup it no longer did it. But with 85,000 miles it is starting to do it again. Any ideas?

That sounds like electric motor noise. Under power or braking, the motors are loaded, when coasting they spin without load.

Thanks. How do I stop the noise? The dealer fixed it during the 60,000 checkup. I don't want to go to dealer unless i really have to.

No. it only happens when i release the accelerator. If you coast down a long hill you really notice it. It will get worse as time goes by. It did the same thing before 60,000 mile checkup and they fixed it.

Try to get the dealer to tell you what it was last time and what they did to fix it. From your description I would have said that that was normal electric inverter noise, but it would be difficult to make that go away... perhaps it was one of the many fluid pumps.
