Are you really getting over 45mpg?

I'm on my second tank and I'm currently at 53 MPG. My first tank average was 48.6. It's going up this tank, just like the folks on PC said it would.

 

I know, I have no right to comment living in Australia but a plastic scraper to remove ice, a warm woollen jumper made for quality Australian wool and shovel the drive will reduce fuel consumption in icy winters.

Walking to school, how quaint. BTW, my son walks over 2 kilometres to school but his mum often picks him up on her way past when coming home. I pick him up when it's as hot as it has been hot in the afternoons but the mornings are fine as the temperature hasn't past 35 degrees Celsius (95F) before 9AM.

Bush-fires are burning 15 kilometres south of my place right now.

 

I drive around 800 miles a week, obviously the majority on the freeway. Very seldom do I get under 50 mpg per tank; usually around 51-52. I check the mileage using the gallons filled divided by the miles driven method and do not rely on the computer. I have around 35k on my 05 Prius, and have been extremely happy mileage-wise.

 

We've had our 2008 Prius for about 2 months and have about 4,800 miles on it. Early on we were getting about 43-44 but with each tank full there has been improvement. We're now getting 48. The difference between the Prius digital calculation and our mileage / gallons calculations vary wildly. We've seen as low as 38 and as high as 54 using the pump measure.

Our driving environment is hilly and we have a penalty of a 2 mile climb that begins about 3 miles from our house so our first 10 minutes in the car are low mileage minutes to be sure.

 

By now you've received lots of advice and bought a tank or two so my 2 cents isn't worth much, however, I, like many others, have kept a spreadsheet and tracked each tank. I've found the MFD to be fairly accurate. It seemed to be more accurate in the summer than it has been lately but overall it's about 3% (1.5 MPG).
