Q "What is the status of the 10,000 additional carpool stickers for hybrid cars that were supposed to start rolling out Jan. 1?"

A "Owners of the Honda Civic and Toyota Prius hybrids, plus older Honda Insights, you still have a shot at those coveted tags that allow solo drivers in these vehicles to use the diamond lane. The Department of Motor Vehicles has sent out 5,945 stickers since Jan. 1 with an additional 1,962 being processed. That leaves nearly 2,100 still available."

Cool-I wondered what the amount of the backlog was.

I figured they would run out soon!!

I applied for the sticker in late November, not knowing they had already alloted out the 75000 stickers in 2006. I did later read about the 10,000 extra stickers in Jan, so all I had to do was wait. I am SO happy I have the stickers now, as the carpool lane has knocked off about 15-20 minutes from the commute every day.

Sold my 2005 Pearl Pod (with stickers) and received a 2007 Barcelona Red Touring Edition in November ... early Christmas present from husband :) ... I called the DMV on Dec. 14 and was told plate no. not available ... left out of town for Christmas and New Year ... of course the plates had come while I was gone. Sent the form as soon as I could, just received USPS delivery confirmation dated January 8th ... hope I make it before the cutoff!

If I were to buy new this week or next, do you think with the DMV processing and then FasTrak (I live in the Bay Area), that I would be able to get a sticker? My Prius purchase kind of hinges on that sticker...

If you do purchase make sure the dealer has an on site dmv office. That way plates and tags can be given out right away. And just take a day to drive out to SF to take care of the FasTrak.....I made the mistake of faxing mine in...took them a week just to process the fax :( and now I'm stuck waiting for the transponder to arrive.

I saw a surprising sight at Costco the other night - a display with FasTrak transponders for purchase in clear plastic packaging.

I didn't check, but I'm sure these are regular FasTrak transponders, not the special "Hybrid" transponders.

    1) Costco has been selling transponders for at least a year, no.
    2) Solo HOV privileges require a STICKER. The transponder has nothing to do with driving solo in the HOV lane.
    3) The transponders are for toll roads.

You are confused because some areas give additional benefits (no tolls where tolls apply, etc). But at the basic level ... thems the rules.

DON'T GET EXCITED....but has anyone heard any talk of the DMV/State considering a release of another batch of carpool stickers for our cars? I have them on my car but would like to buy a new car and do not want to give up the stickers. Thanks.

    No talk. Two issues:

    1) They would have a backlog of a year's worth of cars that weren't able to get stickers.

2). Hybrids -- especially the Prius -- are selling very well (it is the #1 selling car in Santa Clara County) without the carpool perk or tax credit. Obviously, there is no need for extra incentive to buy them.

My question concerns the trade in value for a hybrid (Prius) with a carpool sticker. How much increase in trade in value does a sticker warrant on the average?

I just tried to get some and last week was denied, saying that they were all sold. :(
