Time for first oil change so called local dealer (phoenix area) and was surprised that it costs close to 60.00 but does include a tire rotation, I dont know how many quarts of oil it takes or if it needs special oil.I guess with the money saved from great mileage I shouldn't complain .

3.5 quarts of regular 5W-30 oil. My local dealer charges $30 for an oil and filter change, but I DIY.

Sure you should :_> Review the scheduled maintenance guide and see whether the dealer is charging you for any additional services; anything not in the guide is unnecessary. If it's really $60 for oil and filter only then price it at another dealer. You might also save a few bucks if you provide the oil. That way you also know that you're getting good quality stuff, and if you give them just three quart bottles you also know it won't be overfilled.

In any case no matter who does it *always* check the oil level yourself before you leave the oil change site. It is cheap insurance against disaster.

A little high priced but not out of the ball park.
5 qts of Mobil 5w30 oil ran me $8.97, a filter was another $4.97, that's $15.09 with the tax at the local Wally marts.
    Tire rotation runs about $24.
Guessing they get flat rate at $90 or so an hour. Half hour to do both, providing they rotate the tires while the oil drains.. $45.
Don't know what they are getting for the four qts of oil or the filter, so I'll round it up high.
    Oil @ $1.75 a qt : $ 7.00
    Filter 8.00
    Labor 45.00
    Total $60.00
See not all to bad when you break it down. Question is how much would it have been with out the tire rotation?
Could have save a few dollars by doing it your self, but there is your time and effort to factor in...

Good point. If you have to pay for tire rotations, I suggest the first rotation at 5K miles, then rotating at 10K mile intervals to reduce labor charges.

Pfft, just DIY. I rotate my tires and change my own oil... I just gotta figure out a way to jack up half the car so I don't have to use the spare tire to temporarily hold the car as I swap the tires...

I use a hydraulic floor jack with a longish piece of 2x4 on the saddle, to lift up one side of the car at a time, lifting on the raised rail that runs along the body sides (the front & rear jack points are located on that rail).

In my eyes that is way high.
The Prius only needs about 3.5 qts of oil. If you use synthetic and buy a high quality oil filter its still gonna cost you less than $25 to do it yourself.

If you use the same quality oil and filter the dealer is gonna use it will only cost you $10 to DIY.

I only rotate at 15,000 miles, I do it myself. Rotations are a bit overrated unless the place you buy your tires does it for free, its a waste of money as it costs as much in the lifetime of the tires to rotate them as it would for new tires.

You just need to keep good records and receipts showing the dates and odometer readings when you performed the services.

If you decide to DIY, you can buy the correct Toyota-branded oil filters for $3.29 each when buying a case of 10. See for example:
    http://preview.tinyurl.com/32yw54

This dealer is a good source for discounted air filters, which cost $13 for the engine filter and $15 for the cabin air filter. Your local dealer's prices are likely to be significantly higher.

I look out for engine oil sales in my local area and can buy Castrol GTX, Pennzoil, or Valvoline 5W-30 mineral engine oil for ~$1 per quart net of rebate. Hence an oil/filter change costs me ~$7 plus my time.

Yes I staple the receipt to my Prius Maintenance passport for both my oil and my filters. And I sign and date and write down the mileage I performed the service.

Yeah I'm going to run $ 1.75 a quart oil in my $ 22 Hybrid. And then pay $ 45 labor to have it installed. Dude...c'mon. Try this math:

3.5 quarts of MOBIL ONE $20.
    Factory filter $ 4.
Any Jiffy lube on the planet $ 20

$ 44. And I'm using world class oil not crap I wouldn't use in my lawnmower.
And not getting out of my car.

Easy there big guy, I was just breaking down the figures that were given. If you'll re-read my post, I've noted that for the do it yourself type of person, it's quite a bit cheaper.
Since when is regular Mobil oil, "crap"? Synthetic oils are no better for short interval oil changes (3000-5000 miles with a filter change).
As for Jiffy Lube, anyone that would use their services, is wasting time and their good money for third rate work. If you;re not getting out of the car while in a Jiffy Lube, you're more that likely working there or violating at least the fire code, insurance regulations, company policy, state law in the states the regulate "pit" type repair garages.
By the way my Lawn-Boy mower is 34 years old, it's a two stroke and I use Lawn Boy's two stroke oil. Runs like a champ!
    Ok dude?
