I'm originally from Greenville, and this email just popped up in my Inbox. If you don't mind, take a few minutes to watch a quick slideshow and send an email. Here is the website for the project:

::Greenville Recreation District - Swamp Rabbit::

After watching the video just email [email protected] with your Name and Address so that they can record your viewing.

Here is the email I received:

"GCRD is applying for a $100,000 trail grant for the Greenville Hospital System Swamp Rabbit Tram Trail. One of the requirements is a public meeting to show support and receive comments.

It seemed contradictory to have everyone drive to a meeting that was to support a trail that promotes people not using their cars.

So, everyone can attend the meeting by viewing the short slide show and following the directions at the end.

And tell everyone you know to do the same.

    Thanks you for your support.

Rails to Trails is a great idea. We do it a lot in the Portland area. Great bike trails since they are mostly flat.

    I viewed and emailed... :typing:

Sorry Bill, I can't agree 100%, even though riding a 'rail-to-trail' was part of my honeymoon trip. As an advocate of truly fuel-efficient mass transportation (rail), I have a problem every time a right-of-way goes trail. According to research by Prof. Joseph P. Schwieterman of DePaul University, no rail ROWs that have gone to trails have ever gone back to being rail corridors. Trails seem a good idea when a freight railroad can't wait to rationalize its system, but when a metro area is looking at rail as a way of relieving road congestion and pollution, there needs to be a way to recover the right-of-way for transit use. As long as that's understood, I'm all in favor!

I won't disagree with you Jim. Once a use changes, it's hard to change it back. Rails to Trails is a good use where the rail ROW will never be redeveloped due to parcelization and conversion. A trail is community property.

I get upset at the amount of rail that has been ripped up and melted down. Light passenger rail(Tram lines) around Adelaide was ripped up all but a line from Adelaide to Glenelg. Now the network is slowly being expanded but I doubt it will ever be as extensive as it once was.

The same has happened to the trains. There was also a passenger train once ran about 3 kilometres from my home, was removed back in the 60s, now the nearest rail is about 8km away and not in a very secure suburb. There was also a train station very near where I work the first time I worked there back in the late 70s, the rail got ripped out now the nearest train station is over 6 kilometres away. Short sighted stupidity.
