Pressured to buy extended warrenty now, now, NOW!

    I have a 2006, which is now two years and two months old, and has a piddly 12,000 miles on it. If memory serves (I'm going to have to go look it up) - the normal warranty that comes with the car covers me for 3 years/36,000 miles.

    I've been contemplating buying the extended warranty, I just haven't made up my mind yet. For a while I was thinking I'd jump to a 2009 when they're released, but now I'm leaning towards keeping the 2006. And for $990 (If Troy is still doing that), it's not a bad deal. It's on my list of things to investigate after taxes are done.

    I just received a high pressure sales call that today was my absolute last chance to purchase the Toyota extended warranty. That I had ignored all previous warnings, postcards, and mailings (not that I am aware of any such things), and that after today I would be deleted from their renewal system, and that was that. They had my name, address, purchase date, and VIN, so if they're not legit, they are at least very well informed. They were unable to answer my question of what made 'today' the last day, but insisted that if I didn't commit to $2850 right now, my chance would be lost forever. And of course they were willing to finance the purchase, and as little as $100 right now would keep my warranty alive, and they would bill me for the rest. Offer valid today only.

    Needless to say, I declined. But it brings up two questions which I was unable to find answers to in any of the other warranty threads.

    1) What are the rules on purchasing the extended warranty? Can it be during anytime if the current warranty is still in effect? First two out of three years (in which case I've blown it), or any other limitations?

    2) Is Troy still doing his thing?

    3) Who called me? Were they legit, what were they up to? They claimed to be the National Warranty <something> that managed all Toyota warranties. Although they were very conspicuous in that they never said they were Toyota, or Toyota Financial Services.

    36 months/36K miles. Anytime during that, you can get the extended warranty from Toyota (there are 3rd party warranties that may differ)

    Yes, Troy is still doing his thing. There is a link under Prius Shop. Or, do a search for the thread about it.

    Legit? who knows... I generally hang up on such telephone tactics.

    Thats not Toyota, and that wouldn't have been a Toyota warranty.

    Thats just high pressure sales tactics. Tell em to go screw.

    Also, if you decide to get the Toyota extended warranty, get the one that makes sense to you in terms of the number of years and maximum number of miles covered by the warranty. I understand that Troy sells all versions of the Toyota warranties, at correspondingly low prices.

    For instance, instead of getting the 7yrs/100,000 miles warranty for $990, you might consider getting the 7 yrs/75,000 miles warranty for hundreds less.

    That is a scam warranty call. Happening all over now and there are several state attorney generals and fraud police tracking these scum down.

    Having the time now to google the phone number it came from (3056541842), I concur. Apparently from this number comes a large number of cold calls promising a reduction in credit card interest rates, and auto insurance scams. They violate the DoNotCall list, but if you admit to having a credit card, or a car, they claim 'existing relationship', as they are calling about it - even though they have no connection to it. People are apparently investigating.

    I'll admit, they had part of me on the hook, in the sense that they worried me that my chances to extend my warranty did expire today, and that I had blown it. I was not, however, going to give then over 2K on the phone right then and there. I'm not *that* dumb.

    I'm hoping nothing bad comes from the fact that I confirmed my existence with them, they now know that my car+purchase date+vin+my name are all correct. I guess I better watch to make sure nothing funny happens.

    That is an excellent thought, that I will have to consider. Given current driving habits, I am unlikely to even hit 75,000 miles in my 7 years. Of course things could always change, (move, work moves, drive to more vacations, etc...). So I'll have to look at the actual $ difference to decide which way to go. But thanks for the suggestion, it might not have occurred to me to get a warranty with a lower mileage cutoff.

    For me I would have to go with 7 years / 100,000 miles, as I will put that much mileage in 3 1/2 years. I did 306,000 miles on my '98 Camry before I gave to someone else in January, so having the extra mileage would work...

    If they offered 10 year / 200,000 miles I'd take it....

    Save your money. There is no car less in need of an extended warranty than a Prius. See the April 2008 issue of Consumer Reports.

    If you put 100,000 miles on the car in 3 1/2 years, then the 7yrs/100k extended warranty is not worth it at all. It's 7yrs/100k -- whichever comes first -- so you'd be spending $990 for a mere 6 months of additional coverage.

    OK, I like this thread...

    I agree that the pressure tactics from non-Toyota folks (do you still have a note?) are unreasonable.

    I have a 2005, and will be running out of factory warranty in September (with 23K miles on the car right now). I can't decide whether to do the Ext Warr via PriusChat, or just take my chances.

    My previous car (2000 Volvo)... it was a no-brainer...they had to fix so many items under the standard warranty (stereo, seat belts--really--seat belts on a VOLVO, the turbo...) that I would've been an idiot not to. Besides, it ate headlight lamps at the rate of several per year, which they tried to tell me was normal.

    My Prius... I'm not so sure. I've had NO problems. What might I expect that would/would not be covered by the extended waranty?

    not to swag on toyota, but I had some serious pressure at the dealership where I bought my prius. They wanted 1850 I beilive. I passed on it of course, Ive learned from my last car not to buy into the extended. IF you plan to keep the car at least 5 years or more. I can see getting the warranty.

    Lol. I had the exact same frequency of repair issues with my Volvo -- and from Day 1 (Volvo had to tow my car 4 times during the first year because of electrical problems). Except, unlike you, I was an idiot and didn't buy an extended warranty. I incurred over $5000 in repairs during the first 16 months after the standard warranty ran out.

    On the Prius, we do have to think about it. But my general feelings are that at $990 for 7yrs/100k, or I believe ~$700 for 7yrs/75k, it's a good buy as insurance products go. At those prices, one is much more likely to recoup the premiums (or more), than the thousands of dollars one spends each year for homeowner's insurance, auto insurance, health insurance, life insurance, etc.
