    Hey Everybody,

I'm a happy Prius owner as of 2 weeks now. I've put 900 miles on the car already and had 49.5mpg (hand calculated) while the monitor showed 53+ mpg. I was driving a 3/4 Chevy Diesel (at 20 mpg) back and forth to work each day, but $85 for fuel was killing me. $30 is much much more palatable! :p

So now my current obsession is to get over 50mpg with a tank! :)

    :welcome:

Congratulations on your purchase. Once you get over 50mpg, then you'll go for 55 ... then 60 ...

Congrats on the new Prius! I am in nearly the same situation as you....just bought an 08 package 2 a week and a half ago, switched from an F150. $65 to go 250 miles vs $30 to go 350...hmmm, not a hard decision. Only difference is my Prius is red not black!

I too drove a Chevy 3/4 ton diesel until 1 week ago! I traded for my 08 touring Pkg 2 in driftwood pearl. I have been so happy with my swap. I thought it would be hard to go from a big truck to a "small car" but I have been having too much fun watching the MPG to notice:D.

That is three diesel trucks exchanged for three Prius, and people are breathing easy at stop lights now, until the diesels get resold and back on the road. Probably no coincidence that diesel contains the word die.

:p Hey, at least they were trying to get better efficiencies with the diesels. I had a '79 VW Rabbit diesel Wolfsberg 5 speed with no air conditioning. I could get mid 40's mpg with and drove across the USA and back with 500 miles per tank. I loved that car and miss the thing even though I am much more pleased with the Prius!

    Welcome aboard, new Prius owners!

I had an '80 VW Rabbit diesel, but it had AC. Kind of a cranky, troublesome car, did get decent mileage but was mondo gutless (I think the engine was rated at 46hp) and worse when the AC was turned on, noisy, hard to start in the winter, and had frequent mechanical issues. I wasn't sorry to see it go, although the car I replaced it with was worse in some ways, but that is another story.....

I second the welcome to the new Prius owners, I would venture to say that this is a car that will serve you well and that you will not be writing nasty things about on some automotive website/discussion board 30 years from now.

MPG will rise a bit when the car is more broken in and the engine loosens up somewhat. Also MPG will rise when it warms up outside as well.

Also, hand calculating might be off unless you do it over many tankfulls because 'full' might not be the same each time. The gas tank contains a bladder that may not be the same size at the time of each fill up.

My extended family can't believe that I'm not missing my truck. They all drive trucks themselves. I just framed it in terms they understood. I asked them what their fuel cost was for a week. I said mine's the same, except mine goes almost the whole month :)

I think driving a 3/4 ton truck and trying to eeek out the absolute best mileage (23mpg at one point) starts to prepare you for driving a prius :)
