I just had my first oil change at 5,000 miles and was informed that Toyota recommends a tire rotation with every oil change. With as much driving as I do, that would mean rotating them every other month. That seems a little excessive to me, especially since the dealership I went to wanted to charge me $90 to do both the rotation and the oil change. I want to do what is best for my baby, but I feel like I am being screwed by the dealer. Any thoughts?

My dealer says the same thing and I say...JUST change the oil LOL. If you rotated the tires as much as they want you to you can buy a new set for the amount you'll pay over the life of the tires. I wait till just before it snows and then either put the best on the front or just buy new tires as needed for the snow.

Mist tire dealers/techs, etc, will recommend tire rotations every 5-10K. My dealer charged $15 for rotation, and $20 somthing for express lube. My last 10K maintenance came to $34. $90 seems extremely steep. I would see what was included in that, has to be more than just oil and rotate. My dealer wanted to add brake clean/adjust for total of $59. Come on, you already have the tires off, how much more could it be to take the drum off, vacuume, and check the adjuster? They are self adjusting anyway.

This is why i do my oil changes on tire rotations myself. I enjoy saving the little amount of cash i still have.

nemmrack: I think you drive your prius as much as i do. hehe. Hope you're having as much fun as i am. :)

$90 definitely sounds too high. My 5K service consisted of oil change and tire rotation and ran my a little over $40.

I may be the only sucker, but note that if you have the extra mile option, and you allow them to rotate the tires every 5K miles, they will replace your tires (assuming normal wear and tear) for free for 6 years/100K.

How much?!? Cripes, buy a torque wrench, two jack stands, and a good low-profile floor jack. It's cheaper.
