    Hi all!

What a great forum! Can't wait to dig in :) Still flying high after purchasing my 2008 Spectra Blue Mica Prius on Saturday. Funny how things work out, we'd been waffling between the '09 Corolla and '08 Civic for weeks (hated how the corolla drove, but it had all the features i want. Loved loved loved how the Civic drove but couldn't get the options I wanted). Went in for a last test drive to rule out the Corolla (which we did) and decided on a lark to take the Prius out. It was love at first site! Handled the way I wanted AND had tons of features and toys. Ended up leaving with one off the lot by the end of the day :)

I was very impressed with the salesperson. I told her that my big concern with the Prius was the reports about traction control cutting power to the car when any slippage happened with the front wheels (I have a bit of a hill to go up and down at work and it isn't always cleared well). So she said we should try this hill nearby while on the test drive. She normally only takes trucks up there but if the car could handle it then my hill at work should be nothing. So we did. The car actually did beautifully, powering up the very steep, windy, single lane dirt road. Until we stopped....on a section that was pretty icy. We'd done it on purpose to see how the car would do. The car didn't much like it....each time we tried to move forward the traction control did in fact cut power because the wheels started to spin. We backed up a bit and gave it another go and the car made it up the last section and got us back safe and sound. Talk about real world testing ;) I think any front wheel car without all wheel drive would have found it challenging so I feel the Prius did great.

Congrats on the new car and welcome to PC! How'd you manage to find a Spectra Blue in MA? I couldn't find any in RI, so went for Barcelona Red (which was my 1st choice anyway, but the blue would have been a competition had it been available). Glad to hear the Prius did so well for you in the bad conditions, I went from a 4wd vehicle to the Prius and haven't yet tried it in the snow (none down here). Next winter will be interesting.

Good luck on your new Prius... I have had mine for about 1 month now.. Love it. We should have a New England meet sometime, and compare cars..Since i have blocked my grill I have been averaging 56-61 mpg's.. Makes a big difference.. Try to keep your tire preasure about 45lbs. makes a difference in my milage.

Welcome! I suspect Priuschat will continue to be of great interest as you get to learn about your new Prius. I love to drive mine (the Mystery Machine).

I like your salesperson's approach. I wish more salespeople were more practicle about what you really want and are willing to take a risk that you might be disappointed or rewarded with a very satisfying test drive.

    Cheers,
    Jack

Oops, checked out my window sticker and realized I got confused. The dealership (New Hampshire) had one Spectra Blue and 2 Seaside Pearls. What we have is one of the Seaside Pearls.

I agree, next winter will be interesting. I have 2 coworkers with Prii and they said they've had no problems. It will still be an adjustment going from AWD wagon to the Prius in snow though heh. Thankfully my husband has an AWD car so if the weather is really bad and I'm too scared to risk it, I can take that one instead.

Have to say I'm impressed after day one of my 90+ mile daily commute. Averaged 49.3 mpg! I think this is the start of a beautiful relationship :) Sounds like there is a way to do even better by changing the tire pressure and 'blocking the grill'? Wow!

    Hi all,

Just picked up mine on Friday, but the manual was missing. They are going to mail it to me when it comes in. Is there a way to disengage the traction control? Some times you just need to spin the wheels to get going.

Funny you should say that. There is one planned for Sun. Apr. 6th at the Larz Anderson Museum. Check out the Boston and New England local forums. I hope it's still on because I haven't seen any recent updates but I have been real busy.

Congrats mrsboz99 on your new car and welcome to PC.

What time is the meeting going to be? Do we meet on the grounds to the museum? I look forward to meeting other local prius owners. Have had my car for about 6 weeks now, and love it. Just filled up the tank after 2 weeks and got 54.5 mpg. How great is that !!

Ixnay on disengaging the traction control, there are threads about it on here but the bottom line is that we are stuck with it, and that to try to override risks some serious potential damage to the car.

Very bad idea. That can quickly destroy the drive system. Much better to use snow tires or avoid such situations.
