It took Sprint longer to bring out a Bluetooth phone (not counting the stillborn T608) than I had to wait for my Prius.

Even though the phone is out of stock online at Sprint and at telesales and it has yet to be received by the Sprint Stores, I found one yesterday at Radio Shack.

The Bluetooth pairing was a snap, but then the fun part began.

The MFD will not display the signal strength, I can live with that.

The phone does not ring through the car, I can live with that (I can answer it using the steering wheel button).

I cannot import the phone book. PROBLEM.

I spent close to three hours manually transferring the phone book from my old phone to the new one, because the PM 325 is not compatible with the software that Sprint uses to transfer such data between phones.

I then tried to upload the data to the car. I touched the "Transfer Phone Data" button from the settings menu only to read the following message: "Please send Phone Book from the phone". I went through every conceivable menu on the phone. I searched the skimpy user guide which came with the phone and the more elaborate one which resides online. It does not appear as if that phone has the capability to export such data.

Well, no big deal. I use the cell phone book more as a PDA. I don't call too many different numbers on a regular basis. I figured that I could manually enter the numbers which I use most often into the car's own phone book. WRONG. There is no way to manually insert entries into the car's phone book. At least, I have not found any.

I finally managed to set three numbers into the one touch positions by dialing the numbers manually, while the car was stopped, and then saving those as one touch numbers without identifying names into the Prius phone control panel. To top it off, the numbers are hidden while the car is in motion, so I am supposed to remember who is in which one touch position. I find that totally inadequate.

It is now too late in the week to call LG. The Sprint tech support people are pretty clueless.

Does anyone have any ideas how to manually input the names and numbers into the Prius' phone book or how to command the PM 325 to export the phone book?

    Thanks.

I have that phone also. I really don't think it can be done with the PM-325. It just does not support the required protocol for exchanging contacts. I uploaded several numbers with another Bluetooth phone PPC-6601. Other than doing that, adding numbers from the incoming or outgoing call list is the only other way I can think of.

I cannot imagine any enhancement (it is not a fix or bug) coming soon from LG

It turns out that the LG PM-325 does not support the OBEX protocol which allows objects such contact information to be exchanged using Bluetooth.

Short of borrowing a friends' (GSM) Bluetooth phone, programming my contacts in it and transferring the data to the car, does anyone have an idea how to put my contacts into the Prius' phone book?

P.S. mcitron, Thanks, I saw your reply after I posted this message. Great minds think alike.

    I feel your pain IsrAmeriPrius.

I have the same problem with my Blackberry 7290. Apparently RIM was very sensitive to their enterprise clientele who are concerned about the security risk with the OBEX protocol so they didn't include it in their product. I'm stuck with the same frustration over a phone book that I can't employ. The only solution I can see is to find another bluetooth product to use as a medium for exporting a phone book.

I just re-borrowed the same Ericsson R520m phone which a friend lent me to use during my trip to Europe this summer. It has Bluetooth and an Infra Red Port. The menu does contain a command to send the phonebook contacts.

Hopefully this will work. I'll post an update after I attempt to pair it with the car and upload the phonebook.

Still no luck. The Prius will not pair with the R520m. The HANDSFREE profile was found by the phone only to be followed by a linking failure message on both the phone and the car.

I finally heard back from LG. Their tech support people are no help whatsoever:

I have a Toyota Prius with Bluetooth Hands Free phone capability. I successfully paired the phone with the car, however, I am unable to export my phone book from the LG PM-325 phone to the car. Because of that problem, I am not able to dial out numbers while the car is in motion. How do I upload the contact list to the car's phone book? In addition the car's display does not show signal strength and the phone does not ring through the car's audio system even though I can answer the phone using the Hands Free operation.

Thank you for inquiring of LG Electronics. Although you can successfully link your phone up to your automobile's Bluetooth system, LG does not support for this function of the phone as we did not manufacture the vehicle's Bluetooth system. For further assistance with your request, you will need to contact your service provider. Please feel free to contact us with any additional questions or concerns. Thank you again for contacting LG Electronics. Marlon E-mail Administrator Customer Interactive Center LGEAI

My problem has nothing to do with the fact that my Prius Bluetooth system was not manufactured by LG. Bluetooth is a protocol which is shared by many companies. The car’s system recognizes the LG PM-325 and has successfully paired with it. The car allows me to initiate the transfer of the contact list from the phone. However, I am unable to find the LG phone menu command which will allow me to send the contacts list, via the Bluetooth connection, to the car. This is an LG issue of firmware programming, not a Sprint PCS service issue.

May I suggest that you share my comments with a technician, at a higher level of customer support, who actually understands this problem.

    Thank you.

Thank you for inquiring of LG Electronics.

The PM325 only supports the following Bluetooth profiles on the phone:

    Handsfree Profile
    Headset Profile
    Dial-up Networking Profile

As stated previously, LG does not provide support for linking up your phone up with your vehicle's Bluetooth system. Sprint provided LG with the specifications for the design of this phone. LG does not manufacture accessories for Sprint phones and, therefore, we do not monitor what sync programs and operating systems the phone is compatible with. For further information on accessories, sync programs, and compatible operating systems, you will need to contact Sprint.

Feel free to contact us in the future if you have any additional questions or concerns. Thank you again for contacting LG Electronics.

I have a similar problem with Motorola V551. I cannot say definitely because I am still trying and Motorola's menu is poorly written. Prius support HFP (Hand-free Profile) and OPP (Object Push Profile). Most phones claiming to support Bluetooth in fact only support HFP, not OPP.

Another idea is to use a laptop or PDA that supports Bluetooth (most Sony ones do) and use it to send the contact list to Prius. That is what I will try next. Cheers.

    ceric,
I do not believe anyone has provided details for uploading from a notebook to the Prius. If you are successful, please post information on the software and methods you use to do so. Thanks...

I have uploaded instructions into the PriusChat file area covering a procedure for uploading phone contacts using a laptop or pda. You have to make a bluetooth connection with the phone first and then transfer from the laptop/pda.

I have a Bluetooth enabled laptop (IBM T41) but my "send to" action button does not list bluetooth. Any ideas?

Also, I am not sure if I understand, is the Prius paired with the phone or the notebook. If it is the notebook, what is the purpose of the phone in the transfer?

I hope everyone has done what I have... First, sent emails to the phone manufacturer (LG for me as well) BEGGING them to support the address book transfer protocall (OBEX, I think).

Also, and more importantly, to Toyota begging them to release a software upgrade that will let me manually type these in... I mean, you can manually enter data in the calendar, there is absolutely no reason to no allow phonebook entry.

Today I was able to figure out how to transfer the contact list into Prius with my Motorola V551. However, this must be done one by one, which is fine with me, but it may be a problem for whomever has a lot of contacts. Anyway, I had no luck with my laptop linking with Prius. I didn't try very hard or for very long, though.

BTW, OBEX is for file tranfer. OPP is actually the one for phone book update. For details, look up bluetooth.org, where you can check what functions of what products have been qualified by the Bluetooth SIG, Inc. I don't believe Prius support OBEX, It only supports OPP and HFP. For OPP, a product may support server and/or client functions.
