As a 40 year veteran of the auto service industry both new car dealer and independant I must say "Stay away from aftermarket warranties!". I can't tell you how many times I've had a service writer call up an 800 number only to be informed "That company is no longer honoring any claims.". Or they try to weasle out of covering a part by saying it was damaged by a non covered part. Here's one, I actually had an adjuster tell me the crankshaft with a spun bearing won't be covered because it's not an integral part of the engine. HUH????? I'd buy the factory extended warranty. It may cost a little more but you get what you pay for. Just be prepared with documentation of services should a need arise.

When I bought my Prius last month, the credit union I am using to finance the car tried to convince me to buy their extended warrenty, and that they would not finance the dealer's. So I asked my loan officer straight off if the credit union's warrenty would cover any part of the hybrid system. Since she did not know, she called the warrenty's customer service line. After talking on the phone for a half hour and being transfered back and forth, she told me that they had no clue what they would end up covering on my car. She then advised me not to get the credit union's warrenty... If you look around the board, there is a good warrenty at a good price for Priuschat members.

Extended warranties are essentially insurance for possible future repairs. Unless something major fails, you end up loosing your investment in the warranty.

Prius is a reliable car, the chance of a major failure is slim. Plus Toyota has been shown to help offset the cost of unexpected failures on their vehicles. Put the warranty money in the bank. If you have a failure, use the money to offset the cost. It will probably sit there and collect money until you retire.

Ditto that. Extended warranties make money for the seller, not the buyer, and there is no car less in need of an extended warranty than a Prius. See the April 2008 issue of Consumer Reports.

    Thanks....ALL for your comments...

I re-read the 2008 Consumer Reports Article and it is obvious that if you buy a recommended car(no maintenance issues) You do not need a Extended Warranty.

However I did purchase a Ex Warranty on my Lexus ($1800.00) which was a mistake that I now understand.

    Cheers!!!
