:angry:I constantly drive in traffic and would like my 2006 Prius to stay on 'recirculation' air but it periodically defaults back to outside air. Is there a way to make it stay 'permanently' on recirculating air?

If you don't use "Auto A/C" mode it'll stay wherever you set it. But on Auto the car will do what it thinks is best.

I never use the 'auto' mode
    and it still periodically defaults
    back to outside air.
    Mystery unsolved.

It shouldn't do that. It will only default in Auto mode. Either you are unintentionally using Auto, or you have gremlins living in your Prius.

Gremlins are not out of the question...at all. We don't use auto in my wife's hihy either but it often reverts to/defaults to (but not always) recirculate...we usually don't realize it until the windows start to fog and we can't figure out why it's feeling so stuffy. We've checked all known settings and yet it still, frequently, does this.

Evan, it might be a Trunk Monkey. I've never seen them do this, but if they can toss a car jacker off of a bridge, I assume they can mess with your climate control.

And I've been blaming my wife, guess an apology to her is in order.

...what about the recirc. button on the steering wheel being pressed accidentally?

Yes, it is very easy to do that. Also note that if "front defrost" is set when the car is shut OFF it will default to "recirc" the next time the car is turned ON. Grrr...

Certainly a possibility worth considering, but in my wife's HiHy with the similar but opposite problem there is no climate control button on the steering wheel. It's actually on the far right side of the center display climate control buttons.

I've also been concerned about this and have noticed that with the weather warming up, and the entire AC system off, the recirculation will stay on. The moment I use an AC function, even the defroster, the recirculation goes off.

That's interesting. When I engage the AC, (in auto mode) the recirculation automatically comes on for a while, not off. (I usually run the car in auto mode with the AC off.)

And as useful as a trunk monkey would be, my Prius doesn't have a trunk. I'm pretty sure it's gremlins.

I have the exact same problem - recirculation mode gets disabled. I've tried lots of different configurations and still the same problem.

Now I just manual change to recirculation every 5 minutes or so.

i run in recirc mode most of the time as well. the default is recirc disabled. however, all i have to do is set recirc one time and it stays that way until i restart car.
