Hi there, I'm a Newbie. I have a 2004 Prius UK spec and recently my key fob died all of a sudden, would not open the car but would still start. Through my searches on the WWW i discovered from this forum that there is a re-coding instruction to reprogram the fob which I have followed and voila! it works now.

I subsequently purchased a US Prius keyfob with blank metal key from eBay. I tried to program this new fob as per the instructions again but only managed to get it to start the car. I can't seem to program it to open/close the doorlocks. I got the metal key copied so at least it works as a second set of keys. :)

Does anyone know if the US fob is the same as the UK one in terms of electronics or frequency? The US one has a red panic button, missing in UK fobs.

    Thanks!

you're ahead of me. I had my purse stolen with my 2005 Prius key fob inside. I ordered one from ebay and today took it to the dealer to program. he said it didn't work and the battery wasn't the problem. He said he didn't have anything else he could do to repair it.

So I bought a new one for $310!

Question is, do you have a suggestion re. who might be able to fix it? Would you suggest a locksmith? or do you think the instructions you mentioned would work? I wonder if the key fob has a bad chip.

Hi Svlee - I've just had a similar experience with a 3 button US key fob I bought new on eBay. Did you ever manage to get the door unlocking to work? As well as the chicken dance I also tried with a copy of Techstream and a mini-VCI cable with no success. It would be good to know so that we can warn other non-US Prius owners. I guess I'll now have to buy a new Aussie 2 button fob from a local dealer for around $300.
