My family's planning a summer get-away in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. We're planning who's buying what. A very important question came up:
"Can you purchase alcohol in Virginia and/or North Carolina on a Sunday?"

What a great vacation spot. Where in particular are you going?

In Virginia, beer and wine can be purchased on Sunday at privately owned supermarkets, convenient stores, etc. Hard liquor is sold only by state-owned stores, and they are closed on Sundays except in certain parts of northern Virginia. The legislature allowed them to open only because of competition from across the border in DC and MD.

I'll let the NC folks respond for their state. It's been several years since I've vacationed in NC (the Outer Banks too), and things could have changed.

In NC liquor stores are owned by the state also. They are closed on Sundays. Beer & wine vary by county. Where I live now I cannot buy them on Sunday. Other places you can.

Hope that help. & have a great time.

    Thanks, guys.
My wife and I are flying into Norfolk Sunday afternoon. Other family members are driving from the Midwest.

The questions was to ascertain whether my wife and I can stop somewhere along the drive from Norfolk to OBX and pick up some drink. It sounds as though it will be important for the family members driving to purchase before they leave. We vacationed there once before and learned that the stores are extremely expensive because they can be. For that reason, we are listing all the things we know we will want and are trying to purchase them as inexpensively as possible.

Where will we be? We'll be in Duck, NC. We have rented a house known as the "Quack Shack." With a name like that, how can you not have a good time?

With a large family, spouses and children, an eight bedroom house fills up quickly. Renting the house gives us the opportunity to completely get away as a family.

the "sin taxes" here will bite you HARD. we buy our liquor up north and bring it back down with us! you can't buy liquor (only available at ABC stores) on sundays but here we can buy beer and wine and such any day of the week between certain times.

that was a rough adjustment... not being able to pick up my vodka and my mixer in one stop. :p
