Tire pressure sensors for winter rims?

    That makes more sense.. they must be too big to simply screw into the holes.

    I'm just guessing, but at worst I think you would just have an error light showing it is disabled.

    This is not unique to TPMS valve stems. Normal valve stems are installed from "inside the rim" as well. I personally have never seen screw-in valve stems.

    Yes, that way the air pressure helps to push them against the rim to seal better.

    You don't need to have the sensors installed in your winter tires. A small indicator will appear on the dash that indicates low tire pressure, but it is easily ignored. I only notice it when I drive at night in the winter. This week end I'm putting my summers back on and I hope the indicator light will go out. I may need some minor adjustment, but that will get done during regular maintenance.

    Does the repeated (2x/yr) stretching of the tire bead to remove it from one rim, then place it on another -- do excessive wear to the tire?

    TPM's are available after market. Try Rockauto.com at $59 each. Great site. Dormanproducts.com actually makes them and has a video on how to calibrate them. No need to go to dealer.
