The object of the rally is to successfully complete a set course of about 100 miles within a defined timeframe, and account for the amount of fuel used in completing the course with reasonable accuracy. Participants will compare their achieved mileage to the combined EPA figures for their year, make, model, trim level vehicle as listed on the fueleconomy.gov website. Participants will be ranked according to % above/below their respective combined EPA rating. Vehicles that do not have EPA ratings listed will be listed on the results but not ranked. The course will start and finish at the fair.

Thanks for posting this, Dave. I had a great time last time I was there. Anybody in the area should try to go, even if you don't compete in the rally.

Dave, Bill, everyone else,
Introductory post for me on this forum. my name is Garth and I am a lifelong FE nerd and motorhead. I usually ride a motorcycle that is averaging 54 mpg now. And a small truck when I need to haul something or it's icy or snowy in the am commute. I could do better I'm sure but plans are in the works for a 60+ mpg commuter car that is more family friendly than a motorcycle.

I am the organizer of the MPG rally in Lacey. With all the talk on various forums on hypermiling and people complaining of high fuel prices, something had to be done to demonstrate this. I don't work for the parks dept, I'm just a guy that wants to do something worthwhile. Olympia is a very green community and I thought this would generate alot of interest and hopefully participation. Glad to see a little interest on priuschat.

To make this event successful and take place next year though, it needs participants. The event will be held in the morning so that the finish will be before the EV races and give maximum exposure to the drivers and thier cars. We are planning a placard to display in each participants car the mileage and the % above/below combined EPA, this is intended to generate interest from the public. Dave and others, I would really like your participation in driving this event to give maximum exposure to what people can do now to get better mileage.

Also if you know of others that might be interested in demonstrating high mileage techniques let them know of this rally. It should be alot of fun and a great place to meet other like minded people.

welcome to Priuschat!!

cant tell you how much i appreciate your efforts. so many people are unaware that most of their issues with the cost of transportation is caused by THEIR habits and not the price of gas.

we have a member here Wayne who is a hypermiler and gets 55 mpg in a regular Camry. he is proof that a hybrid (although recommended) is not necessary to save a bundle on your fuel costs. (saving the environment, reducing our dependence on foreign oil, etc also is nice!)

as far as the rally, i personally would love to do it. i was wondering, since the Prius keeps track of its mileage and performance, would it be necessary to fillup before and after the rally? or could we just reset the mpg calculator in the Pri instead?

Hi Dave, thanks for the welcome and the post on the other forum. Hope some participation grows. If your could, please post on other sites that you think may have some interest and among your FE loving friends. The word needs to get out. BTW the good Mayor of Lacey has helped push this along as well. He visits gassavers.org occasionally.

About your question. As it stands now, I think that we should all use about the same measure just for consistency sake. As accurate as a gas pump anyway. Those that are OBD 2 have the scanguage that can be pretty accurate as well but can be skewed by the user, not sure if the Prius' computer can be biased by the user. Just to keep it simple and consistent I think we should all do it the same way at least this year.

Hopefully this event will grow next year and then we can introduce classes, maybe controlled filling on site by Fast Fuel and actually have a real competition. That would be fun.

Also, if you're interested in helping prepare for the event or have some good ideas to make it more fun/better, please pm me.
-Garth

ok, thanks for the reply. consistency is always the best course.

just for an FYI, it would not be possible to skew the on board computer to change the mileage. just making sure it was reset at the start of the rally is all that would be needed. the total mileage would have to match the length of the rally, there is no other adjustment available other than to reset tank mileage to zero

there is another site www.PSTOC.com (puget sound toyota owners club) that might be interested. tried to go to the website and got nothing... hmmm, will check on them later, might be their site is down for some reason

Hi Dave! I haven't been here for a long time. I've been hugely busy with my job and my photography.

But I'll be at the fair, I've already sent in my application for showing my car. I hope I'll you and a lot of others. Anyone else coming that you're aware of? Last year seemed very sparse for Priuses.
