The SRCA Newsletter has an article on Page 23 for those who live in the Scripps Area....it states that the driver of the truck was released from the hospital that night. To send get well wishes, go to the Loire Valley message boards at Loire Valley HOA or send a note to 10775-F Scripps Poway Parkway. Ste. 142 San Diego, CA 92131.

The owner of the 2007 Prius is still alive.
He is still in a coma (it has been 5 weeks and 1 day since the accident)

It has been a tough battle for Jack but he has a lot to live for and he is still fighting. The nurses and doctors are taking great care of him.

    As far as injury goes:
    - All of his ribs are broken but healing.
    - His left femur, tibia and fibia were broken - he now has two rods on his left leg.
    - His right knee was shattered - he now has alot of hardware holding his knee together.
    - His right hip is now replaced with an artificial hip
    - His left arm was broken at the radius and ulnar - now has a rod holding those together.
    - His kidneys are now functioning - he was on dialysis for a couple weeks because his kidneys failed.
    - He is still on a ventilator because his lungs are still not strong enough to work on their own
-They have him off the coma inducing medication and he is beginning to show subtle signs that he is waking up.

The car itself was completely totaled. The rescue crews had to use Jaws of Life for an hour to get him out from under the engine. The paint cans that were in the back of his car exploded and one of the lids hit his head, that is why he has head trauma.

Jack Kriz is a strong man and has a phenomenal support system. When bad things happen to good families people really pull together. He loved his Prius and is lucky to be alive.

[IMG]Just to add another human element to this sad tale, here's a pic I ran across in the San Diego newspaper (Union Tribune):

Wow. With any luck, when Jack leaves the hospital the driver of the truck is going to get one hefty hospital bill.

    oh my god,

even though i'm not too religious, i think that a lot of people here are saying a word of prayer for jack.

hope he heals fast and completely (??)

the accident was unfortunate and very humbling. crap happens out there on the road.

please post how he is doing. keep us up to date.

I want everyone to know that the driver of the truck is having a hard time as well with all of this. He is doing ok but his thought and prayers are with the Kriz family as well. It was a freak accident and I think the truck driver is being rudely talked about, thinks happen and this one was one. I could understand if there were alcohol and drudgs involved but there were none and he had insurance.

Incredible list of injuries to have survived. I hope that he gets well soon :(

I find it remarkable that he may not have suffered serious head trauma if it weren't for the paint cans. Were they in the trunk? I wonder if the tonneau cover would have made any difference.

I'm so sorry for the Prius driver. It's terrible to be the victim of a crash like that where one party just comes right into your lane. The truck driver may be broken up about it but he is still responsible.

I just read this horrible accident report. The You Tube video shows us a man full of energy and enthusiasm.
This video is the first post since May 9, 2008....it implies that he's still with us ?
If so, please let Jack know that a growing list of prayers is being offered up by us.

Last I heard, Jack is doing well and back home. I can find out more for you tonight when I will talk with my friend who lives on the same street.

Does anyone still have all of the pictures from this crash? A question or hateful comment occasionally comes up on Y! Answers and other forums as to the safety (or the supposed lack of) of the Prius. For example here is a post from HVAC-Talk and I would like to correct this user but the news site took down the pictures and I can't find them using a google image search and it would be helpful to have them to help prove my point.

    From page 2 of hvac-talk. com/vbb/showthread.php?t=275722

(had to add a space since it won't let me post links yet)

Edit: The internet wayback machine doesn't have them either, it shows that page as not archived.

The dinky hybrids aren't the problem, the bigass overweight, overly high Dodge rams, et all, should be all put out to pasture with the other dinosaurs.
