Does the prius support folders on MP3 cd's or no? I'm going tomorrow morning to pick my car up and am compiling some cd's of music to take with me for the trip back. 6 in all that might stay permanently in my car. i have an iPod but don't want to worry about controlling it on the way back. Any way to play AAC files from itunes on it? Or do they have to be MP3?

It plays MP3 cds with folders no problem (note: you can only browse the folders when the car is not in motion). I'd be shocked if it can play AAC files (although I personally never tried it).

i'll have to double check this at home... but i think my "mp3" cd i made is actually aac...

i made a cd of some of my downloaded songs.... aren't they downloaded as aac? if so... then yes... they play!

AAC is a format solely for iTunes and iPod; I wouldn't expect it to play on anything else.

I have a Zune (yay Microsoft) and a 6' auxiliary cable from radioshack (like $7) and I use it on every drive more than 15 minutes.

You can burn a conventional (non-compressed) audio CD of AAC tunes using iTunes by setting that as your preference when burning. This option should be available for all the audio tracks in your iTunes Music library.

You can also choose to burn an MP3 CD using iTunes. When you do this, any AAC tracks that you have in your library that are not "rights protected" (for example those you ripped from your own CD collection) will be burned in MP3 format. However, iTunes does not permit converting tracks you purchased from the iTunes Store (which are protected) into MP3 format for burning.

iTunes (at least the Mac version) does not offer the option to burn a CD in AAC format. The three available options are Audio CD (non-compressed), MP3 or data CD (or DVD). The Prius models with MP3 capability will play either of the first two.

I don't recall if itunes converts aac's to MP3's if that is the specified recording format. If it did i didn't know about it maybe it's a new feature i'm using a powermac. Does the Lockpick disable that limitation of browsing folders? I would have to have to stop on the shoulder of the highway to change folders!

No, AAC is not solely for iTunes and iPod, several other players can use AAC format including the Zune. AAC is Advanced Audio Coding aka the MPEG-4 (.m4a) audio standard.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Audio_Coding

You may be confusing this with the Apple Fairplay DRM standard (protected AAC or .m4p). Protected AAC will only work with iTunes and iPod, although it is pretty trivial to remove the DRM, either by burning to CD and reimporting as MP3 or by using a program designed to strip off the DRM.

    Hi all,

I'm new to the forum! We've had our 2008 Prius for a little over a week now and we love it!

Anyway, I tried burning a disc last night using Nero Burning ROM. I did a mix of MP3 and M4a (AAC). When I put the disc in only the MP3s show up.

Does anyone know how to get the Prius 6 CD changer to accept the Apple/iTunes M4a (AAC) format? I'd like to be able to do this without having to convert them, as I think that will result in some data loss.

    Thanks,
    Ted :)
