wierd noises

    So i have a couple of wierd noises that i wanted to see if anyone can tell me what they are about before i go to the stealership.

    One is a rubbing noise that i hear while turning. I notice it more at slower speeds or in an enclosed area such as a garage and it just doesn't sound nice. It almost sounds as if the tire and something else are rubbing on the driver side...

    Another noise is when i come to a complete stop, there is a tha-dunk sound that comes from the rear of the car as if the battery is hitting around. is that even possible lol? its almost as if an object in the trunk something is hitting the panels hard (trunk is empty)

    any help would be much appreciated!

    What size tires do you have on the front axle? I suggest that you fully turn the steering wheel in the direction that will provoke the rubbing noise, then turn off the car and set the parking brake. Insert your hand above the tire and see if you can feel whether it is contacting the fender liner.

    Regarding the sound from the rear of the car, I suggest that you inspect the spare tire and the jack, and see if any hardware is loose. If necessary, remove all items from the trunk including the tire and the jack, and see if the sound persists.

    Is the turning noise in a really tight turn, almost at lock?
    I get that, a sort of rubbing/binding noise and as far as I
    can tell after tracking it as carefully as I could, it's just
    the folds of the outer CV boots rubbing against each other as
    they go around. Scared the crap out of me the first winter night
    I heard it, I thought the differential was about to shred itself.
    .
    The other one, the klunk from the rear, is something I've been
    trying to chase down for two years now. It's *probably*
    something related to the struts, but I can't actually reproduce
    it on demand no matter what I do with moving forward or backward,
    braking, regen vs. physical, etc etc. It happens most often
    at the transition while slowing through 8 mph.

    For the noise in the back: check to make sure your rear seats are securely fastened in their upright position. If you have folded them down in the past you may not have latched them well after putting therm upright again. Hope that's all it is!

    I have the factory tires all around. And i will try what you recommended..sounds pretty valid. thanks!

    its a 2006 with 35k miles on it and it has not been modified in any way

    Another valid point.

    Thanks for all of the ideas! i will try these out and see what happens.

    If you mean the center multi-function display, take comfort in the expectation that it will never happen again. Toyota corrected the original deficient design to eliminate the problem, and even a reconditioned used unit should be more durable than the original.
