Where is your aftermarket GPS mounted?

    I was actually trying to find a thread like this as I was awaiting my new Nuvi 650 (wifey got the old 350 since smaller is better these days ;)).

    So where has everyone else mounted their GPS units?

    I was used to having a gps in front of the manual shiftknob in my 03 Maxima where I had it mounted in the ashtray location. I realize some people think it's safer up higher but I don't like having all that stuff on the window and I'm pretty used to just listening to the prompts. Just used the sticky disk that comes with all Nuvis to stick it to the area below the radio and stuck the suction cup to that, tucked the cable behind the unit and whalla....Nuvi reads 18 foot accuracy which is only a couple feet off of what I had with an externally mounted GPS antenna.

    Ah! That is an excellent idea! That would eliminate my hatred of the cord draping down the front!

    I had been putting mine on the dash to the left of the touch screen. The suction cup works there. But i'm stealing your idea!

    Garmin's beanbag mount is superb. Nothing left behid to attract thieves when you take it down. it will not move.

    Does the antennae get good reception tucked against the body of the interior? Did you use the permanent disk or the removable one?

    Lenjack: I actually saw it a few days ago at WalMart, looked sturdy and easy to mount but kind of an eye sore imho.

    MrBlaise: Nice color btw ;) Like I said, the Nuvi tells you the satellite accuracy and it's 18 feet which is about the same if I had it mounted on the window so the accuracy is good. Takes a few more seconds to catch the signal when I turn everything on but overall I've used it for a couple days and everything seems find.

    As you can hopefully see in the picture, I used the permanent sticky disk to stick it beneath the console and then the removable suction disk to stick onto the sticky disk which is how its meant to work.

    A word of caution, however, the Garmin mounts are CHEAP and JUNK, so if you plan on moving the suction mount frequently I'd be careful since the suction mounts are very very easy to wear out. Obviously you can clip off the Garmin as much as you want but the suction cup just wears out and is expensive to replace.

    My Nuvi 750 is mounted on the windshield next to the rear view mirror. Love my garmin, and the MSN direct receiver is integrated into the power cord.

    just wondering what your satellite accuracy is when mounted on the window...you can find out by going to the home menu, clicking the green signal bars and itll say like xx foot accuracy

    cool so than my 18 feet having the antenna way down under is pretty good

    Unfortunately in California it's illegal to mount anything on the windshield. Plus, I like the under the dash look much better. I've never like the look of power cords.

    No GPS here --

    I love maps -- fold-out maps, book maps, wall maps, USGS maps, topo- maps, sattelite maps, historical & rare maps, foreign language maps ...

    Before a trip I peruse & compare maps & write down my route on a pad in CAPs that I can easily read & understand at a glance. When I made an error, I pull off, look over the map & try to figure it out. If it takes time, that's ok, I'm not speeding in the Prius anyway.

    GPS ok for some, but not for me. ;)

    This is my TomTom One XL mounted with a ClickOn mount system. This is without doubt where a GPS should be.
    At easy arm's length
    In peripheral vision
    does not obscure any other information.
    Does not inhibit any part of vision outside the car

    The unit gives a reminder to put it away when you switch the ignition off.

    The down side is the mount cost $215AU delivered, but includes a power supply, it would be much cheaper without the power supply.

    I use the Garmin beanbag mount on the dash to the left (I'm left handed). It's very stable and easy to use. You can move it around to wherever you need it. When you park the car, you can hide the whole thing in your center console.

    The wires don't bother me any more. At first, I spent a long time tryng to figure out a way to anchor the wires so they aren't dangling, but then I gave up and just slipped them behind the stalks on the steering wheel. They don't get in the way.
