duplicating metal door key?

    Does anyone have any tips for getting a working duplicate made of the Prius's metal door key? The key is smaller than a normal Toyota-style key, and the machines at the local big hardware stores could not copy it because of the size difference between it and the blanks. I then took it to a smaller hardware store that still uses the hand-cutting machines. Although we made three attempts using two machines (all of which looked spot-on when comparing visually with the original), none of them actually worked in the lock.

    I like to leave the Prius running, but locked, when making short deliveries, and using the metal door key is the only way to do that. But the dinky emergency key is really difficult to handle and use on a regular basis, so I'd like to get a copy made on a blank with a conveniently bigger head.

    Do you think this is something the dealer can do at a reasonable price? That is what I am going to have to check out next!

    Go to a decent locksmith or key shop. Hardware stores are terrible at duplicating keys. The Prius key is a standard Toyota blank, but smaller on the end. You can use a standard blank if you can get the mini one to fit in the duplicator.

    Should be pretty simple. I had a few made at Lowes. The copy is a full size key, but the working end is the same.

    How or where can I get a spare Prius key fob and how can I get it programed, other than going to a dealer.

    Remember that the part that stops further insertion is the tip
    of the key, as opposed to a metal shoulder further up the
    shank, so if they get that length wrong it's not gonna work.
